REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, & COMPETENCIES

  • Minimum Level 1 Certificate/Licenses for:
  • Water Treatment or Limited Surface Water
  • Wastewater Treatment
  • Water Distribution and Supply, and Wastewater Collection certifications;
  • Higher level of Operator’s licensing, qualifications and/or experience considered a strong asset.
  • Post-Secondary Education in the Environmental, Chemical/Biological, or Engineering Training and certification in Confined Space Entry (CSE), Working at Heights, First Aid, Lock-Out Tag-Out, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods are considered strong assets;
  • Good understanding of the latest technologies in the Water and Wastewater industry considered a strong asset;
  • Basic knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations (for example, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Drinking Water Standards, Drinking Water Protection Regulations, Safe Drinking Water Act, Spills Act, etc.) considered a strong asset;
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft software packages including Access, Project and Teams, as well as web-based data entry systems for payroll and expenses considered a strong asset;
  • Possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and is familiar with various types of tools;
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and a willingness to develop and grow these on the job;
  • Proactively, or by management request, maintains current training and pursues advanced certification;
  • A valid Ontario Class (full) G driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract, to drive a company vehicle, or;
  • A valid Ontario Class G2 driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

Responsibilities:

(THIS IS NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF DUTIES TO BE PERFORMED) PERFORM ALL OPERATIONAL AND MAINTENANCE (PREVENTATIVE AND CORRECTIVE) DUTIES FOR ASSIGNED FACILITIES, (INCLUDING DAILY ROUNDS, SYSTEM MONITORING, HOUSEKEEPING AND REGULATORY SAMPLING);

  • Maintain logs and records pertaining to system performance and conditions, in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements;
  • Collect regulatory Water and Wastewater samples; microbiological, chemical, raw sewage and effluent using necessary Chains of Custody and proper packaging;
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, approvals, orders, and guidelines;
  • Communicate using strong oral and written communication skills, to clearly describe operational items to members of the public, clients, government agencies, equipment suppliers and contractors/tradespeople, as well as internal staff
  • Adjust, inspect, and evaluate process performance and equipment, to optimize efficiency and effectiveness in accordance with established procedures
  • Conduct in-house laboratory work utilizing handheld instruments (colorimeters or spectrophotometers)
  • Operate, monitor, and repair surface/ground water treatment plants, well-based distribution and supply systems, pumping stations, reservoirs including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), various digital and analog instrumentation and control systems, numerous monitoring, reporting and communication systems, pressure tanks, filtration systems, continuous online analyzers, and related appurtenances, valves, hydrants etc.;
  • Operate, monitor, and repair wastewater treatment plants with varying degrees of complexity (moving bed biological Reactors (MBBRs), membrane biological reactors (MBRs), rotating biological contactors (RBCs), waterloo bio-filters (WBSs), sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), ultra-filtration membrane filtration (UFMF), reverse osmosis (RO) treatment systems, lagoons, septic systems), using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems along with less sophisticated control systems, landfill leachate and sewage pump stations, and manholes, etc.;
  • Operate, monitor, repair and maintain various Wastewater Plants and collection systems including related equipment and SCADA software;
  • Interprets Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Process and Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs), reviews Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and assists with asset data collection from sites for Compliance / Operations / Engineering;
  • Work independently to troubleshoot numerous types of equipment malfunctions, makes necessary repairs using Operations and Maintenance manuals, and seek input from peers by telephone or through the computer using: Teams, Skype, Zoom etc.;
  • Comply with the on-call rotation schedule including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays; with the ability to respond to alarms at various sites 24 hours a day;
  • Participate in the commissioning of new treatment plants, including process optimization, instrumentation and control as well as SCADA;
  • Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by using appropriate PPE and completing all assigned Health and Safety training, as well as input for improvements;
  • Help to promote a positive working environment, and puts forward a professional approach with the clients, establish and maintain relationships between Clearford and the client;
  • Drives long distances, including during inclement weather.
