Marketing and Communications within the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Web Communications Advisor for approximately 12 months.
Working on a fixed-term project to update Faculty of Science websites with new messaging and branding, the Web Communications Advisor will collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders including senior leaders, departmental representatives, unit administrators, and other members of the Marketing and Communications team. The Web Communications Advisor reports to the Director, Marketing and Communications, in the Faculty of Science.
The Web Communications Advisor is responsible for updating the visuals and content of websites throughout the Faculty of Science. There are over 900 different pages on the Science domain, attracting millions of views each year from internal and external audiences. In alignment with the University’s Start Something brand and the Faculty of Science’s Get Science Done strategic plan, the faculty is embarking on a year-long plan to fully update and optimize its websites. Working alongside the Web Specialist and Director of Marketing and Communications, the Web Communications Advisor will design and implement these updates in collaboration with various units throughout the Faculty of Science.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Quickly develop an understanding of the Faculty of Science’s key messages, brand standards, and strategic direction
- Quickly develop an understanding of Science’s specific implementation of Drupal 9.0, along with template conventions at the University of Calgary
- Manage all aspects of copy, photos, video, and other elements of content prior to implementation, including oversight of branding, web compliances, consistency, tagging, and localization of content
- Update website content in a timely manner, incorporating both planned updates and as-needed changes
- Add science related news and events to relevant CMS
- Maintain and develop website forms and SharePoint sites
- Maintain employee contact information in UCalgary’s profile website system
- In consultation with the Web Specialist, review and optimize webpages for efficiency in both content and structure, archiving or deleting excess content where necessary
- Develop and implement plans to achieve strategic goals and priorities across Science web communications channels
- Together with the other members of the Marketing and Communications team, work with departmental leaders and representatives to understand their desired changes to the website
- Create and implement a web content strategy to ensure new and evolving content in a variety of topic areas is highlighted on key web pages
- Ensure strategic initiatives and priorities are represented on webpages across the Faculty of Science
- Review and monitor overall website performance including search engine optimization (SEO), performance analytics, and broken links
- Support the implementation of additional analytics tools as needed
- Provide guidance to content contributors on use of analytics and reporting (e.g. Google Analytics reports) to inform and improve future content
- Triage relevant technical issues and respond to any content or CMS queries
- Stay current with recent web technology and communications trends
- Collaborate with colleagues across the Faculty of Science and the wider campus community
Together with the Web Specialist, act as a point of contact for website inquiriesAttend regular team meetings to ensure alignment
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Visual Communications, Design, Marketing, Business, or a related discipline
- 5-7 years of related experience
- A combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
- A strong background in website development is essential
- Previous experience in Drupal 9.0 is a strong asset
- Certifications in web content management, business communications, digital communications, writing style guidelines, or similar are an asset
- Alongside excellent web skills, a strong background in writing or visual design would be a strong asset
- People skills in a user-based design approach and creative problem solving
- Experience in project management demonstrating an ability to plan for, and efficiently manage, multiple complex tasks along with strong attention to detail
- A high degree of personal effectiveness and initiative in a fast-paced, challenging environment
- An ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative team setting as well as in an independent, self-directed environment
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to exercise good judgment within established guidelines
- A willingness to engage in on-going learning to stay well-informed in a rapidly advancing industry
- Experience working in a complex, diverse, and innovative environment would be an asset
- Must be open to learning and development as well as willing to accept new challenges and assignmentsAbility to work collaboratively with a team, as well as independently, is essential
