Responsibilities:
The Wildfire Data Analyst is responsible for creating, analyzing and interpreting complex datasets related to fire weather, fuels and fire spread to support decision-making processes for wildfire management, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies. This role involves working with large-scale environmental data, applying statistical and machine-learning methods, and collaborating with stakeholders to provide actionable insights on wildfire behavior, risk, and impacts.
The role will involve the manipulation and use of a wide range of datasets (imagery, lidar, GIS, etc.) to create datasets that support prediction of wildfire fuel attributes and wildfire spread. The creation of predictive models/frameworks is also key to this role. More generally, the role will include:
- Gather and manage data from various sources, including satellite imagery, meteorological data, geographic information systems (GIS), and field reports.
- Ensure data accuracy, completeness, and reliability by implementing quality control procedures.
- Analyze large and complex datasets to identify patterns, trends, and correlations related to wildfire occurrences, spread, and impacts.
- Develop and apply models to predict fuel attributes and/or wildfire behavior and assess potential risks.
- Assess factors influencing wildfires, such as weather patterns, vegetation, and human activities.
- Prepare and present detailed reports, visualizations, and dashboards to communicate findings.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including fire ecologists, meteorologists, GIS specialists, and foresters.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, and training sessions to enhance wildfire management strategies.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines and workflows to automate data collection, cleaning, and analysis processes.
- Stay updated on advancements in data analytics, machine learning, and wildfire research to integrate innovative methods into analysis tasks.
