Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development is seeking a highly motivated individual interested in filling the role of WildfireTraining and Safety Specialist based out of Wildfire Service Headquarters located in Winnipeg. Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License
  • Must be ble to travel throughout the Province of Manitoba as required including flying frequently in a wide variety of small aircrafts in adverse weather conditions
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties assigned to the position
  • Must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends and overtime as required
  • Must be able to travel and stay overnight in remote field camps as required

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in adult education, community development, resource management based program with several years wildfire experience or another applicable field and/or possess an equivalent combination of wildfire suppression and training experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Experience designing, developing, implementing, facilitating and/or delivering training programs and learning principles to diverse adult learners groups
  • Effective leadership skills to effectively manage diverse class learning activities.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage a complex workload while meeting competing deadlines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with various audiences.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to clearly communicate detailed information and facilitate instructional and/or training programs.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Proficiency working with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), or similar computer applications.

Desired:

  • Experience with interpretation and application of legislation, policy, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System.

Duties:
Reporting to the Provincial Wildfire Training and Development Coordinator. The Wildfire Training and Safety Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, implementing and auditing wildfire technical skills training programs such as Incident Management Team courses, Crew Leader and firefighter courses, Type 2 and Type 3 Emergency Firefighter courses, chainsaw competencies, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems and Transportation of Danger Goods. The Specialist audits and evaluates materials, delivery methods and strategies, and provides ongoing maintenance and improvement to program initiatives. This position is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of resource extension training programs including the Emergency Fire Fighter (EFF) Program.
The Training and Safety Specialist is required to participate in various provincial and national working groups and task teams to coordinate program development, identify and adopt best safety and training practices, and assist in identification and implementation of priority wildfire training. Additionally, this person will be required to liaise and coordinate with various stakeholder groups and emergency response agencies such as First Nations, municipal departments, Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner, Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization, and other government departments. This position will provide technical expertise and assistance to the Provincial Wildfire Training Development Coordinator. They will participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of the safety and health systems within the Department. This position is involved in the selection, mentoring, development and supervision of provincial instructors. The Wildfire Training and Safety Specialist operates in supervisory/leadership positions on Provincial Incident Management Team on large and/or complex wildfires and may be required to assist in the Provincial Wildfire Operations Centre in various capacities.
