Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Health & Human Services, and under the supervision by the Senior Administrative Specialist, and under the direction Department of Accessible Learning Department Chair and working collaboratively with the faculty, staff, and students the Work Study Assistant will be responsible for organizing, facilitating, and supporting work experience practicum’s and will provide non-instructional support in classroom settings.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Human Service Worker Diploma or equivalent education.
  • Minimum 2 years work experience supporting individuals with diverse learning needs.
  • A current criminal record check.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with current labour market conditions and local community businesses and resources;
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills;
  • Possess a valid BC drivers license with access to a vehicle for work related functions;
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision; establish priorities and work under pressure;
  • Knowledge of current Work Safe, health and safety practices and procedures, and Employment Standards Act.
  • Ability to compose correspondence and reports using current MS Office programs.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications, the internet, and with MS Office software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams.
  • A current criminal record check.
  • Applicants should be prepared for testing

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a working relationship with students (and support persons where appropriate) in order to determine individual interests, skills and goals.
  • Identify appropriate Host Employers and arrange work experience placements based on student interests, skills and goals.
  • Familiarize self with course/program content in order to facilitate student’s generalization of skills from classroom to work and community sites.
  • Monitor and maintain work experience progress records on each student.
  • Communicate with Program Instructor about the student’s on-going progress in the work place setting and together develop strategies to address challenges that arise.
  • Attend team meetings, learning contract and learning contract report meetings, and provide verbal and/or written progress reports. Provide written progress reports at the completion of the program.
  • Provide initial and ongoing reinforcement and support for the students in the work experience setting, as well as reinforcing learning in the college setting.
  • Establish and maintain liaison and advocacy relationship with host employers and workers in the work experience setting, as well as with individual students and (when appropriate) their support persons and related external agencies.
  • Administer a work experience evaluation to the student mid-point (if appropriate given time-frame of work experience) and a final work experience evaluation with the host employer and student.
  • Support specific individual learning goals of each student through modeling, role-playing, as well as use of task and activity analysis. Develop check lists and other learning aids as needed.
  • Assist students in determining transportation alternatives to/from work experience settings.
  • Handling all documents, including confidential materials and information in accordance with College policies and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA).
  • Other non-instructional duties as required.
