Description:

UPMC Health Plan and Workpartners is hiring a full-time Workers Compensation Underwriting Technician to support the WC Underwriting team. This role will work standard daylight hours, Monday through Friday and may work remotely. For local candidates, occasional in-office attendance may be required as needed.
This position reports to the Program Administration Supervisor. They will be responsible for providing Underwriting, Risk Control, and Claims with information necessary to make sound underwriting decisions (i.e., marketing, customer service and administrative support affecting brokers/insureds from initial submission through policy issuance and renewals). They will also provide support within established performance standards and priorities that are responsive to marketing, underwriting, retention and service goals. The Underwriting Technician assures all related support activities are delivered in a manner consistent with business unit customer service and expense management focus.

Responsibilities:

  • Policy Transactions: Processes new insurance policies. Gathers and organizes specified information and reports to assist the underwriting department. Distributes quote letters and/or insurance policies to agents, brokers, underwriters, and/or insureds. Completes entry with the appropriate name clearance system and indexes all supporting documentation in the underwriting file. Processes endorsement requests. Processes renewal insurance policies.
  • Customer Service: Communicates effectively with Commercial Workers Compensation team. Responds to policy service requests from underwriters, agents, and brokers. Requests additional information required to handle an account. Works with underwriting and others to resolve any discrepancies. Communicates with brokers/agencies, insureds/customers and internal departments (i.e., researches and resolves issues, responds to inquiries and questions). Resolves customer inquiries, complaints and services requests. Process other insurance transactions to provide customer service and support efforts to acquire and retain profitable business.
  • Tropics: Performs necessary system transactions. Assists in the administration of web-based agency/client portals. Assists in the release of weekly, monthly and other periodic reports.
  • Miscellaneous: Responsible for processing quality, timeliness and file maintenance; Meet productivity and quality goals/expectations. Work independently to make sound business decisions. Reviews incoming business transactions and related information for completeness, accuracy, and quality. Risk Master data entry (policy information and hierarchy) & maintenance. Perform other related support duties as requested, such as answering phones, processing mail, assisting customers, scanning, photocopying etc.
  • Bachelors degree required OR High school diploma (or equivalent) and 3 -5 years of customer service and/or administrative experience.
  • Current producer’s license is required or must obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Located in EST timezone preferred.

  • Knowledge of administrative procedures and software applications (such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
