GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:

Under the direction of the Manager, Building Automation & Operations , the incumbent will be responsible for the co-ordination of Building automation, Controls and metering activities executed by the Control tech shop at the university of Toronto St. George Campus and its affiliated buildings and Systems . The role will be responsible to ensure smooth operation of the shop and at times execute work assigned to the shop in the event of un planned manpower shortage.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: University or College degree and/or expert knowledge obtained through a minimum of ten (10) years’ on the job experience related to automation & controls.
Experience: Minimum 10 years Building Automation technical experience, including a minimum of 2 years supervisory experience in building automation and mechanical environment systems..
Skills: Must have leadership and mentoring skills. Proficent in Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Expert in programming and configuration of either Siemens (Apogee/Desigo), Honeywell (Comfort point-EBI) and Johnson Control (Metasys ), Automated Logic or EcoStruxture Platform. Programming and setting up network control systems with functional block diagram (FBD), Statement Logic (STL) and Ladder logic (LL) based application environments. Verify and calibrate various flow and BTU meters.
Must possess strong technical, organizational and maintenance skills in the trade. Must be fully conversant with relevant electrical, building, and fire codes, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Excellent communication, organizational, supervisory and problem-solving skills. Experienced in SAP tools operation in generating Service orders and procurement process.
Other: Strong communication skills in English (written/oral), must be a team player and enjoy working in a structured team environment.

Responsibilities:

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated:
a) Conducts daily, weekly, and monthly reviews of service orders (issued, pending, and on hold), prioritizing tasks and allocating manpower based on workload, work nature, deadlines, location, and the urgency of assignments.
b) Monitors and tracks the progress of tasks assigned to Control Technicians, providing guidance and corrections as needed. Ensures adherence to quality and safety standards, and works alongside technicians when necessary.
c) Performs regular inspections of job sites, troubleshooting major maintenance issues or supervising staff handling these tasks.
d) Receives and processes material and supply requests from Control Technicians, ensuring timely ordering and delivery to the relevant work locations.
e) Collaborates with the Manager or designated representative to coordinate the involvement of contractors and other trades to ensure the timely completion of service orders.
f) Communicates with customers to clarify work orders, discuss scope, access requirements, timing, special considerations (e.g., biohazards, radiation), and delivery schedules for special orders.
g) Prepares formal estimates upon request, participates in site visits, and liaises with customers, property managers, utility supervisors, subcontractors, and suppliers.
h) Fulfills the regular duties of a Control Technician when there is an unplanned shortage of staff.
i) Reviews daily timesheets and evaluates Service Order reports submitted by Control Technicians to ensure sufficient detail is provided for clear communication of progress and to meet productivity goals.
j) Assesses training needs for Control Technicians and coordinates on-the-job training to address skills gaps.
k) Performs other related duties as assigned.
