If so, consider being the Writer & Content Specialist for the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. Join our friendly, collaborative, and hardworking development team, reporting to the Associate Director of Marketing & Communications.
The Writer & Content Specialist will play a key role in developing high-converting, equity-grounded content and stories to be leveraged for fundraising, brand building, and stakeholder engagement. The content and associated materials will serve to promote the mission and work of the organization with a focus on both the causes and consequences of hunger. The person we are looking for is a skilled and imaginative copywriter and storyteller who can work independently and as part of a team to produce clear and compelling content for a variety of channels and mediums in the distinctive voice of the Food Bank.

What You Would Be Accountable for:

The Writer & Content Specialist will be responsible for the following key pieces of work:

  • Writing high-performing, brand-consistent copy for a variety of development materials including impact and annual reports, bespoke fundraising collateral for major donors, newsletters, blog posts, ads, and general fundraising letters and emails.
  • Story gathering, including interviewing Food Bank participants, community members, community partners, donors, volunteers, staff and members of the public for inclusion in a variety of content channels, such as blog posts, social media posts, newsletters, brochures, and other marketing collateral.
  • Pitching new story ideas and coming up with new ways to showcase the work of the Food Bank.
  • Develops and maintains our story bank, including developing stories that can be leveraged across the organization in multiple mediums for fundraising, advocacy, building partnerships and more.
  • Maintaining and establishing relationships with partners, volunteers and participants including identifying those who are willing to share their stories for various fundraising and advocacy activities like stories in fundraising, events, advocacy efforts, and with the press.
  • Interpret creative direction and adapt points from creative briefs into persuasive content.
  • Supports the development of messaging, talking points and other communications content as needed.
  • Maintains the Food Banks editorial style guide.
  • Provides editorial feedback, copyedits, proofreading, and punch-ups to existing content drafts.
  • Support other teams and departments with writing, editing and content creation as needed.

What You Would Be Doing Right Now:

  • Strive to make content generation a collaborative process, revising copy based on feedback and direction, and helping other team members refine their content with careful copyediting.
  • Have a strong understanding of the organization and its work, including building active relationships with frontline staff, partners, participants, volunteers and more to identify story ideas.
  • Bring strong editorial and story development skills to the process of gathering and creating stories for use across the organization.
  • Remain familiar with the brand, voice, and communication materials of the Food Bank.
  • Conduct thorough research and interviews to generate content for future communications.

What Else You Should Know:

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 3+ years in writing copy for non-profits for print and digital channels is preferred.
  • Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish language fluency is not necessary but preferred.

KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent writer with experience writing for fundraising and development.
  • Digital media creation experience is a plus not necessary.
  • Experience ghost writing for senior executives.
  • Ability to generate and pitch new ideas.
  • Working knowledge of AP style.
  • Experience writing and crafting content for diverse audiences.
  • Has a love of collaboration and digging into the editing process.
  • Can work independently, has excellent time management and organizational skills, as well as excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
