Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Writing Associate position. The Writing Associate is a part-time (up to 19 hours per week), limited-term, casual position with no benefits, starting at $25.50/hour. Given Amherst’s distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Writing Center seeks a Writing Associate to contribute to inclusive support for student writing, reading, and speaking across Amherst College’s liberal arts curriculum. Primarily, the associate supports student writing in individual consultations. They are knowledgeable and engaged in the field of inclusive college writing instruction and writing center pedagogy.
The associate will take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
This is an in-person position for the Fall 2024 semester only. Position open until filled.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Provide writing consultations to support a highly diverse group of students’ development as writers
- Communicate, collaborate, and confer with other members of the Writing Center staff about subjects germane to their Writing Center duties
Qualifications:
Required
- Master’s Degree in a relevant field
- Formal or on-the-job training in composition, rhetoric, or writing pedagogy
- Minimum of 2 years as a writing center consultant or writing instructor to students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
- Training in composition, rhetoric, writing instruction, and/or writing center tutoring
- Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills, with an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
- Commitment to and demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion as related to higher education
Preferred
- A combination of training, study, and professional experience in writing center pedagogy
