Advanced Trainee/Fellow in Paediatric Anaesthesia: 6-month or 12-month post
The Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia and Pain Management at the Royal Children’s Hospital has an annual turnover of 20,000 general anaesthetics, 2000 acute pain consultations and 200 chronic pain management consultations. The Department is staffed by 27 full time, 10 sessional specialist paediatric anaesthetists, 12 advanced trainees/fellows in paediatric anaesthesia and 9 anaesthesia registrars. There are 35 anaesthesia technologists who assist the anaesthetists.
Six-month positions: these positions are suitable for those wishing to consolidate their paediatric anaesthesia skills and ultimately work in a general hospital environment where healthy children undergo surgery and anaesthesia. These positions may also be suitable for anaesthetists who need more specialised paediatric experience before pursuing a career as a specialist paediatric anaesthetist. Six-month positions start on either 5/02/25 or 5/08/25.
Twelve-month positions: these positions are suitable for those anaesthetists intending to become specialist paediatric anaesthetists. Four of these positions involve a three-month rotation to neonatal intensive care and two positions involve a six-month term in paediatric intensive care. The starting time for the twelve month position is 5/02/25 but consideration will be given for a start on 5/08/25.

The Advanced Paediatric Anaesthesia Training Program includes:

  • General paediatric anaesthesia
  • Paediatric anaesthesia sub-specialties:eg Craniofacial surgery, neurosurgery, urological surgery, major orthopaedic surgery, cardiac surgery, and cardiac, liver and renal transplantation
  • Acute pain management (ward rounds and out of hours cover)

An active anaesthesia teaching program is provided for all advanced trainees which includes:

  • 4-hour tutorial every second week designed for advanced trainees (on a 6 month cycle)general departmental education meeting for ½ hour per week

  • Advanced trainees will be expected to participate in the out of hours roster.
    Applicants must have passed their ANZCA final examination or equivalent by June 2024.
    Consideration will be given to anaesthetists who are post ANZCA fellowship, provided they can demonstrate a commitment and suitable plan for a career in paediatric anaesthesia.
    Candidates applying from outside the ANZCA system will be expected to have a minimum of similar training (ie 4 years of accredited full-time anaesthetic training and completion of basic paediatric anaesthesia training).
    Assessment for this position will include personal CV and references as well as the planned application of the paediatric anaesthesia training to the individual’s career path.
