About the opportunity
We are a public health service 25min drive from the CBD in a growth area of Melbourne. We have a number of consultant general surgeons that will supervise and guide doctors to gain valuable experience and exposure toward future training position applications.

General Surgery is a core specialty at Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH) with expansion and growth seen in the last few years. The position will assist the General Surgery consultants provide a range of services at WMH including emergency assessment and management, pre and post-operative care, attending operating lists and the outpatient management of patients across a range of emergency and elective general surgery conditions. General surgery includes sub-specialties in Acute General Surgery, Colorectal, Upper Gastrointestinal/Hepatobiliary and Breast/Endocrine and the doctor may be required to help in these roles. One fixed term contract is available – Feb 2025 to Feb 2026

  • Clinical duties will be as a senior registrar/fellow, that includes support for the 2 accredited (SET) registrars, unaccredited registrars and residents in general surgery. This doctor will be directly involve hospital based management of patients, including emergency assessment and management, pre and postoperative care, attending/managing operating lists, outpatient clinics and managing the weekly general surgery MDT planning meeting and audit/quality assurance requirements of the unit.
  • Provide high quality clinical care under the supervision, or with the support, of the consultant general surgery surgeons and participate fully in the activities of the department.
  • The position would be suitable for a doctor post fellowship level general surgery examinations, and seeking to gain future entry into a General Surgery Sub-specialty program.
  • May be required to participate in the oncall roster that may include some weekends
  • The successful applicant will be employed as per the terms and conditions set out in the current Victorian Public Health Sector (AMA – Victoria) Doctors in Training (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement
  • Research projects would be encouraged and supported as part of this role

ABOUT YOU: Candidates will be required to have,

  • Applicants must be eligible for registration with AHPRA for positions of up to 12 months from starting date as a surgical registrar
  • FRACS or post-FEX
  • Prior experience as a general surgery registrar in a senior role
  • A high standard of written and verbal communication skills
  • A practical common approach to problem solving & trouble shooting
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
