Description:

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a 501(c)3 grantmaking foundation that receives an annual Congressional appropriation in excess of $310 million and is governed by a private, bipartisan Board of Directors. This unusual arrangement positions NED to play a unique role as America’s leading foundation for freedom, empowering the institution to be nimble, innovative, and risk-taking in support of democratic activists, civil society organizations, independent media, and the NED family core institutes (the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, the Center for International Private Enterprise, and the Solidarity Center).

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA) is a knowledge platform within the National Endowment for Democracy that is dedicated to supporting independent media as a cornerstone of democracy assistance. CIMA publishes action-oriented research, supports communities of learning, and convenes events. CIMA seeks a full-time program and communications assistant who will report to CIMA’s Associate Director/Editor. Successful candidates will have an understanding of democracy, media, and international politics. The program and communications assistant position provides candidates with an excellent opportunity to improve their knowledge of media development, democratic development, and international affairs, and introduce them to the media development and democracy assistance communities. This position will support CIMA’s administrative and communications tasks, with the aim of taking on progressively more responsibility for CIMA’s communications over time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, journalism, media studies, international affairs, international development, or a related field required.
  • Copy-editing experience.
  • Experience assisting with event logistics.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Mail Chimp;
  • Experience using a contact management system.
  • Knowledge of one or more foreign languages is an asset.
  • Prior administrative experience preferred.
  • Prior experience with financial procurement and payments is an asset.
  • Experience living, working, or studying abroad preferred.
  • Strong editing and writing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Self-starter and able to take initiative.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities:

  • Support CIMA’s communications activities, including developing weekly newsletters, managing CIMA’s social media accounts, and supporting website maintenance and updates.
  • Analyze CIMA’s social media and website analytics
  • Coordinate communications within NED and externally
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of a busy calendar of public events and roundtables
  • Document events by taking notes and producing meeting summaries
  • Assist with travel logistics and reconciling expenses
  • Assist with financial procurement, including liaising with NED’s finance team and tracking procurement and payment processes
  • Assist in tracking CIMA’s budget expenditures and projections
  • Help populate and maintain a contact management system
  • Assist with administrative and other related tasks, as needed
