JOB SUMMARY

The Division of Access and Community Impact is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Advisors in our TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. This position plays a critical role in supporting the academic success and holistic development of program participants by providing guidance, resources, and support services to increase persistence, good academic standing, and graduation rates amongst first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities. The ideal candidate will be passionate about student success, possess excellent communication skills, and have a strong commitment to inclusive excellence, support, and engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Recruitment: Identify, outreach, screen, and onboard first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities to participate in TRIO SSS.
Advice and Assistance in Postsecondary Course Selection: Share a caseload of approximately 140 advisees, providing supplemental academic advising to TRIO SSS participants. Assess student needs, resources, and barriers to achieving a post-secondary education. Develop, implement, and evaluate an Individual Plan of Action (IPA) with participants. Connect students with appropriate campus resources, such as tutoring services, counseling, and financial aid.
Education and Counseling to Improve Financial and Economic Literacy: Provide program participants with the full range of student financial aid information and guide them in obtaining financial assistance.
Programming: Design and implement programming to enhance the academic, career, and personal development of program participants. Assist in planning educational/cultural activities, as well as special events such as award ceremonies.
Retention Initiatives: Collaborate with campus partners on retention initiatives targeted at TRIO-eligible students, such as academic workshops, peer mentoring programs, and early alert systems.
Data Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student interactions, academic progress, and advising appointments using university advising software systems. Utilize data to track student success metrics and identify areas for improvement.
Professional Development: Stay informed about current trends and best practices in academic advising and student success. Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences to enhance advising skills and knowledge.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree.
Ability to keep accurate and timely records of student contacts.
Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment.
Ability to be attentive to details, show initiative, be accurate, be precise.
Ability to reason/analyze; maintain confidentiality; and demonstrate patience and understanding with TRIO-eligible students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in education, student affairs, or counseling related
field.
Prior experience with TRIO or other educational opportunity programs.
Experience counseling, advising, teaching, and/or mentoring TRIO-eligible students.
