POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the College of Health and Human Services Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, and in close collaboration with leadership in the School of Nursing, the Academic Advisor will provide high quality, accessible and consistent advising services to both lower and upper division undergraduate students, primarily in the School of Nursing. This will include students admitted via direct entry, upper-division transfer students, post-licensure RN-BSN and second baccalaureate students. The position facilitates the successful recruitment, admission, transition, retention, progression and graduation of students. Undergraduates include both traditional students admitted as first-time freshmen, as well as transfer students.
The Academic Advisor is accountable for the advisement of prospective first-time freshmen and transfers, and continuing SDSU students on complex issues. The position provides advisement via individual counseling sessions, group sessions, and workshops; assists students in the development of education plans; helps students to acquire relevant information and support services; interprets and explains policies; assists with course selection; explains and clarifies educational goals; and develops academic programming in collaboration with various campus departments and entities. They are also responsible for mediating and resolving complex student issues and providing referrals to appropriate campus resources.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of two years of experience as an academic advisor at a college or university is preferred.
- Master’s degree is preferred.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
- Demonstrated experience presenting information to a group.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing data to determine trends related to retention and graduation rates.
- Experience providing outreach services to students, specifically first-generation college students.
