POSITION SUMMARY

The Accounting Assistant Co-Op assists in monthly general accounting procedures (bank reconciliation, account reconciliation, auditing, and governmental reporting) to ensure timely and correct data collection and reporting. Works on a variety of projects as needed.
Starting in September for a 10-month contract period.

  • Posts journal entries as needed.
  • Scans documents.
  • Audits purchase journals.
  • Posts manual AP entries.
  • Distributes printed cheques.
  • Processes expense reports for validity of expenses.
  • Reconciles Petty Cash accounts.
  • Prepares month-end and year-end reconciliations.
  • Maintains various spreadsheets needed to perform above duties.
  • Performs coverage of colleagues as requested.
  • Summarizes the weekly and/or monthly subsistence reports, verifies the information, prepares summary report(s), and submits to accounts payable or payroll for processing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Writes routine reports and correspondence.
  • Calculates figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.
  • Applies concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Organizes and manages time, duties, and activities efficiently.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Post secondary status in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related and/ or 6 months to 1 year related experience Knowledge of a Windows operating environment and ability to learn Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel.
