JOB SUMMARY:

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated doctor, who is committed to excellence to join our dynamic team. This post will be for a fixed term period.
Portsmouth Hospital Trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country treating over half a million patients each year. Our purpose-built Haematology-Oncology Centre is situated in Queen Alexandra Hospital. Combined Haematology/ Oncology (CHOC) is a 46-bed unit on one floor across 3 wards (F5, F6 and F7). Haematology-Oncology Day Unit (HODU) is staffed by 13 full and part-time trained chemotherapy nurses and treat approximately 80 - 90 patients per day.
Our Acute Oncology Service (AOS) has 11 dedicated acute oncology assessment and treatment beds for patients presenting with complications from cancer treatment and the management of acute/emergency cancer symptoms. This service was commended in Quality in Care - Oncology Excellence Awards.
This is a full-time Specialty Staff Grade (CT 3 +) post in Medical Oncology. The appointee will work together with 5 + Band 6 Acute Oncology Practitioner Nurses and Medical Oncology ST3+ trainees at Acute Oncology admission Bay for attachments of 12 months covering a range of tumour types. The post holder will be required to demonstrate that they have experience in oncological management, and preferably will have MRCP (non compulsory) or equivalent. The post may be attractive to a candidate who have completed Foundation and Core Medical competencies (or equivalent) and wish to gain further experience in Medical Oncology before pursing ST3 training.
The post holder will be given a job plan that covers the Acute Oncology Service as well as gaining clinic experience with the Medical Oncology team, further aiding application ability for ST3 training
Although this is a non-training post, the successful candidate will be assigned a consultant educational supervisor and will be encouraged to maintain an educational portfolio with appropriate assessments to their level of experience. There are regular educational, clinical governance and departmental meetings, as well as Wessex Regional Oncology study days. The department is committed to clinical research with participation in clinical trials in all major tumour sub-sites. There are also a wide range of opportunities to participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
Fixed Term Contract for 12 months, however this can be extended based on training needs.
Full GMC registration is essential.

Although this post is not approved for postgraduate training the duties are the same as the existing national approved training posts within specialty. The successful candidate will be assigned a consultant clinical supervisor and will be encouraged to maintain an educational portfolio with appropriate assessments to their level of experience. There are regular departmental lunchtime teaching sessions which are open to all medical staff to attend. There are also a wide range of opportunities to participate in clinical audit and improvement projects.
The Trust will also support you with a clinical appraisal which you can use towards your revalidation. We have a comprehensive support network with two consultants providing pastoral support to the Locally Employed Doctors within the Trust.
For Doctors who wish to remain with us, we have a newly implemented CESR programme to support doctors who are within 2 years of obtaining their Specialist Register membership.
Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Primary medical qualification recognised by the GMC

EXPERIENCE

  • Higher professional training at ST3+
  • Preferred competition of Core Medical training and Foundation level training
  • NHS experience would be desirable

Responsibilities:

  • Provide Registrar level day to day care for Acute Oncology admission, together with AOS NPs.
  • Attend Medical Oncology Educational Seminars and lunch on Fridays.
  • Participate in the Outreach covering of Day unit in emergency, for Day unit in set SOPs.
  • Support the Acute Oncology Nurse Practitioners to complete teams goals for patients.
  • On Oncology on-call rota (Daily 8-6 pm Mon - Friday)
  • Complete all admission compliance for patients in the Acute Oncology Service that will be admitted to the CHOC wards
  • Participation in Audits for Acute Admission or new Policy changes.
  • Provision of clinical support to oncology Day procedures such as Ascites Drain, or Chest drains.
  • Co-ordinate and implement specialist care for patients with a new diagnosis of cancer or complications of cancer, initiate rapid referral to relevant oncology sub-site team and/or palliative care team.
  • Supervise and assist Acute Oncology Team
  • Triage New presentation of Cancer unknown primary to CUP team.
  • Participate in GP Calls for advice.
  • Ensure training compliance and clinical responsibilities are adhered to
  • Management and Leadership roles through participation in Chemotherapy Governance Group, Research Trial Protocol meetings, monthly Mortality/ Morbidity meetings
  • Audit and Clinical Governance
  • Undergo regular appraisal throughout the post
  • Attend Trust educational and departmental meetings.
  • Demonstrate awareness of national and local guidelines relating to specialty (e.g. NICE guidelines) and influence care developments in accordance with these.
  • Identify, contribute to or lead on aspects in the development and dissemination of evidence-based guidelines, standards and protocols as required and implement change to improve the quality of patient care.
  • Attend local, regional and national networks/meetings
  • Present at seminars/conferences/meetings.
