Description:
The Division of Media Arts + Practice (MA+P) within the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California seeks an Adjunct Assistant Professor to teach one 300-level course titled IML 328: Introduction to Sound.
This class engages with sound as a primary modality and explores the technical and theoretical issues surrounding the production of sound-based media projects. It provides a broad overview of the areas of sound perception, modes of listening, sound design, and sound art. It also provides an introduction to sound recording and editing. Students will also learn how to actively listen and perform critiques of sound-based works, and should leave the course with a strong foundation for creating their own sound-based media projects. The course is situated within a program that integrates theory and practice and asks students to produce sound projects informed by an awareness of the historical and conceptual issues that structure sound-based media and technologies.
The ideal candidate for this position has extensive experience in sound design and sound art and is able to teach the perceptual and physical foundations of sound art, sound design, and sound installations, along with the critical theoretical discourses pertaining to the field.
Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree in related field
Minimum experience: 3-5 years experience in sound design and sound art and their perceptual and historical/theoretical foundations.
Preferred education: Master’s degree in related field
Preferred experience: 5-7 years experience in sound design and sound art and their perceptual and historical/theoretical foundations.
USC reserves the “Adjunct” appointment for faculty teaching less than full-time at USC, who are employed full-time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Adjunct faculty typically teach only one course per year but, in exceptional cases, may teach one course per semester, if approved by the dean.
The hourly rate range for this position is $30.00 - $45.00 per hour. This is an adjunct 25% FTE position.
When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations
