We are looking for a Medical trainee to join our accredited basic and advanced physician training programme. We are accredited for 6 months of advanced training in Geriatric Medicine and twelve months advanced training in General Medicine as well as 2 years of basic medical training.
The department of health of older people provides a range of services including acute care of the elderly, acute stroke care, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient and community services. This role focuses on the assessment and management of patients of all ages presenting with acute stroke and TIA. Northland has one of the highest rates of acute stroke in the country and we have a ten bed Acute Stroke Unit (You will have the opportunity to learn about initial assessment and management including selection for thrombolysis and clot retrieval. In addition you will also have the opportunity to attend a neurology clinic once a week.
You will also participate in the acute medicine on-call roster work with opportunity to expand experience in other specialties such as Acute Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, Oncology, Respiratory and Gastroenterology
The position will allow you to grow your skills as a Registrar working closely with your consultant means you can widen your practice as your skills grow.
We provide close supervision for trainees in inpatient, community and outpatient settings, allied with a commitment to teaching. We also host medical students from Auckland University and this provides the opportunity to practice and improve your own teaching skills. There is an active clinical training programme with didactic sessions, interactive based teaching, journal club and videoconferencing of RACP lectures. There is the opportunity to participate in the Northern Regional Geriatric Medicine Journal Club in Auckland.
Whangarei Hospital provides secondary care services to a large rural region with high levels of social deprivation, an ageing population and high health needs.
