Description:

Main Duties and Responsibilities Expert lead specialist, able to provide custom manufacture across a broad range of orthodontic devices to include fixed, removable and functional devices, designing and manufacturing as requested. A small multidisciplinary team, staffing numbers require the post holder support the dental technology and maxillofacial specialties Cross cover other service activity to maintain provision Training junior staff, local and regional in specialist field; teach/support other service staff Active role in maintaining and auditing the clinic and laboratory areas to ensure a safe working environment for staff and patients May be requested to support the consultant led clinical services e.g., assisting on the orthodontic clinic or taking intra oral impressions* and face bow records for specialist dental rehabilitation*. Prioritise own workload, organising multiple clinical and technical tasks Have expert knowledge of relevant material science applied to the construction of medical devices (properties, biocompatibility, rheology, and toxicity) Maintain a safe environment for staff and patients within the laboratory and clinical areas. Maintain the databases of medical devices and patient treatments to satisfy the requirements of regulators (Medical Devices Agency/MHRA) Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and working instructions for area of expertise Maintain quality control for the specialist area of the service (devices); create and format databases for monitoring/audit purposes Responsible for monitoring and basic daily maintenance of specialised laboratory equipment Monitor stock levels in own area of work Responsible for identifying suppliers in terms of cost and quality in the best interests of the Trust for own specialist area and device compliance To observe and comply with current health and safety and COSHH legislation.
Manage potentially hazardous working environment (body fluids, toxic chemicals) by good laboratory practice and laboratory compliance with current health and safety and COSHH legislation To carry out the above in compliance with Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC and in accordance with department Medical Devices Agency registration policy (MRHA) Ensures implementation of Trust, department, and specific service policies To undertake any other duties as reasonably requested by Band 8b, 8a, Consultant and senior Directorate management staff * Requires extended scope of practice training for DCPs. https://www.gdc-uk.org/standards-guidance/standards-and-guidance/scope-of-practice Communication Requires good communication skill across a range or professional scenarios to be able to explain complex device/manufacture information Daily cooperation and coordination with the multiple disciplines within the service to include orthodontic technology, maxillofacial prosthetics, dental prosthetics, crown and bridge staff. Maintain the optimal delivery of the specialist orthodontic technical service, to include emergency work provisions Provide technical expertise on medical device design and their uses Providing advice to consultant medical and dental colleagues and other staff Occasionally receive sensitive patient information Service Delivery and Improvement Compulsory attendance at the formal monthly laboratory service meetings; these are essential for service delivery and improvement. Required to lead these meetings and take minutes on a rotational basis Plan and prioritise own workload Conform to CPD requirements of professional registration Recognise the need to develop own skills as services evolve to provide the most up to date devices for treatment The post holder will develop further skills throughout their career that extend the scope of their primary training (scope of practice).
These activities are encouraged as they offer personal and wider service development opportunities for improved patient treatment e.g. oral impression course Will require innovative problem-solving skills to provide unique custom devices Active role in departmental audit Active in research and innovation within the directorate People Management and Development Oversea junior service staff working in their specialist field of work e.g. dental technology trainees and scientist trainees (Reconstructive Science) Support the teaching activity in the department to dental core trainees Support staff development Offer in house training to support other staff Patient Care Delivery Support the specialist clinical activity of the service, ensuring data protection measures are enforced and patients records are completed correctly Follow professional codes of conduct (GDC) Will require high degree of specialist physical skills, a high level of dexterity, artistic ability, hand and eye co-ordination, accuracy and precision for custom device manufacture Work within own professional competency and professional boundaries of registration to ensure the safety of patients Learning and Development Attend mandatory training updates as required Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and the wider service as part of the personal development process Patient treatment evolves and the requirement on staff to maintain knowledge and skills is an ongoing process; staff will identify their own learning needs and jointly plan training requirements with their line manager Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales Participate in the Trusts appraisal process to discuss how your role will help deliver the best possible care to our patients and help to deliver any changes in service.
