Description:

As an AI Platform Engineer II, you will be an integral part of the Enterprise AI Platform Team, supporting all missions of UCSF in health, research, and education. You will be working with our proprietary AI tool, Versa, which supports both chat and API connection capability. This role offers an exciting opportunity to develop your skills in AI, machine learning, and programming while contributing to a team that’s innovating at the intersection of technology and healthcare.
As part of your role, you will be actively involved in the creation, QA, and launch of AI models on our Versa platform. Your job will also involve close collaboration with stakeholders, understanding their requirements, and transforming them into effective AI-based solutions. Working closely with the team and EIA Platforms Manager, the maintenance and enhancement of our existing AI software’s performance will fall under your purview, as will the task of improving the Versa platform’s functionality with chat and API capabilities. Your role and responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with various users and customers to understand project requirements and objectives.
  • Assist in the design, development, and maintenance of Versa AI platform.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code for various parts of Versa AI, under the guidance of senior developers and manager.
  • Participate in data collection, processing, and analysis to prepare datasets and data sources.
  • Conduct basic tests and experiments to evaluate the performance of AI tools.
  • Document code, algorithms, and model performance to ensure transparency and maintainability.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest AI research and techniques to suggest improvements to existing tools.
  • Collaborate with various teams to assist in deploying AI solutions into development, testing, and production environments.
  • Participate in code reviews to learn from peers and contribute to the team’s knowledge.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving issues related to AI applications.
  • Support the team in maintaining a robust and secure AI infrastructure, following best practices in cybersecurity.
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development to grow skills in AI and machine learning.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

As a preeminent health sciences campus and health system of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is at the forefront of creating a new knowledge from the exploding volume of clinical discovery and education data that it creates and manages. UCSF believes that the ability to leverage these data assets is an important differentiator for an academic healthcare center and is critical to our drive toward Precision Medicine and the execution of key UCSF strategies for Clinical Enterprise. Enterprise Information Analytics vision is advancing UCSF’s ability to care, heal, teach and discover by providing ubiquitous access to relevant and high-quality information and analytics. We do this by working with our clinical, research, education and business customers to organize, integrate and govern UCSF’s information assets and then develop targeted data sets and analyses that provide important insights. We also work with cross-functional teams across UCSF to deliver AI solutions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent work experience of 2+ years will be considered.
  • Experience working with AI and machine learning models.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as .NET, Python, R, JavaScript, SQL, etc.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think algorithmically.
  • Ability to represent relevant information in abstract models. Critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years of relevant experience
  • UI/UX development experience in web and/or mobile applications.
  • REST API programming experience.
  • Experience with generative AI large language models, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and/or fine-tuning.
