Job Title: Educational Assistant

Job Overview: Educational Assistants help teachers carry out the educational mission of the school and
make the educational experiences of children more rewarding. The duties that support staff are assigned
depend on their qualifications and competencies and on the provisions of the Education Act and other
legislation. Educational assistants can work in the classroom, in the gym and also support the safety of
students through supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school education with completion of an Education Assistant Program, university education

courses and/or diploma.

  • Excellent written and spoken English modelling is essential.
  • Demonstrated behaviour management skills and experience working with English Second

Language Learners is an asset.

  • Communication skills, patience, enthusiasm and flexibility are necessary qualities to be

successful in this position.

Responsibilities:

General Duties

Working under the supervision of certificated teachers you will:

  • Assist students and teachers in the classroom.
  • Motivate and encourage students to participate in classroom activities.
  • Demonstrate tasks as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Prepare and distribute materials; use technology to support student learning
  • Perform other related duties as directed.
  • You will be responsible for supervision of students in the classroom and during recess and lunch

hour.

  • Other duties as required and assigned.

Diagnosing Observe student behavior and provide information to teachers.
Planning Provide advice on available resources.
Assist in preparing materials, creating materials, creating displays and
undertaking other supportive activities.
Disciplining Work within established structures, including classroom management
structures, behavioral guidelines and IPP expectations.
Teaching Clarify elements of the lesson for students who are having trouble.
Supervise reinforcement activities.
Evaluating Collect data for use in student evaluation.
Mark objective tests for the teacher to review.
Reporting Report to teachers on students’ strengths, achievements and needs.
Report to teachers on observed student behaviours and outcomes.
Staying Current Keep up to date on school, district and provincial policies.
