Job Summary & Responsibilities

Onto is seeking a motivated individual to take on a dual-role as an engineering manager and hands-on engineer. This role requires balancing 50% to team leadership and project management, and 50% to hands-on development and algorithm design for the Inspection Business Unit (IBU).

  • Has experience managing small teams and delivering high-impact projects.
  • The candidate must be able to connect their understanding of complex hardware/software systems, customer needs, and algorithms to select the optimal approach to hit the performance and throughput requirements.
  • This individual will apply their skills in machine learning, image processing, computer vision, mathematics, optics, and software engineering to develop algorithms to be integrated into onto’s innovative inspection platforms.
  • Responsibilities of this position include: develop optical imaging modeling/calibration, and/or develop image segmentation, classification or detection algorithm for the onto inspection systems.
  • This person is encouraged to bring forward creative ideas, develop production code and support as needed. This candidate shall be able to work independently and provide recommendations to the hardware group on image quality and error budget base on algorithm design and performance.
  • Significant experience is required shipping solutions that use machine learning algorithms, ideally in compute constrained environments.
  • The candidate is encouraged to have excellent problem solving and communication skills.
  • The candidate is expected to stay up to date with academic research and current industrial practices in machine vision inspection, image processing, and machine learning.
  • Should be competent with at least one numerically focused programming environment such as Python or Matlab using the native linear algebra, image processing, and machine learning libraries. Should also have experience deploying algorithms in traditional languages such as C, C++, C# and CUDA.

  • PhD or MS or Bachelor in EE, Computer Science, Applied Math or related field
  • Doctorate (Academic) Degree and 0 years related work experience; Master’s Level Degree and related work experience of 3 years; Bachelor’s Level Degree and related work experience of 5 years
