Responsibilities:

The Anatomical Pathology kapa (team) is located within Canterbury Health Laboratories and provides histology and cytology services to Canterbury and a tertiary referral service and multidisciplinary kapa (team) support for the South Island more broadly.
We have access to a wide range of IHC stains, diagnostic molecular pathology (NGS and FISH) and surface marker flow cytometry techniques within Canterbury Health Laboratories. FNA biopsies are performed on site, including palpation-guided and image-guided biopsies (including EBUS and ROSE evaluation), and the laboratory supports the national breast, cervical and bowel screening programmes as well as the national perinatal service.
We are accredited for up to 4 years of training with the RCPA, and opportunities exist for rotations to the molecular genetics department and/or mortuary to fulfil rotation requirements.
Our pathologists are well supported by a team of registrars, experienced laboratory scientists and Pathology Assistants who perform simple and complex cutup. We work collaboratively in subspecialty teams and have a wide-ranging case mix, as would be expected from a tertiary referral centre in a major teaching hospital. We have close links with the University of Otago, and many of our medical team contribute to teaching medical students.
