POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Animal Care Technician provides complete animal care including clean housing, adequate food and water, appropriate environmental enrichment; maintains adequate health records and monitors health of animals and adequate environmental parameters in the assigned work area. The technician is to follow the schedule and meet the facility requirements (SOPs) and standards.
The animal facility is open 7 days a week, on the weekends and statutory holiday. Part Time Animal Care Technicians are required to work alternative weekends and all statutory holidays.

SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

  • CALAS certificate
  • Experience from other research facilities
  • Some comprehension of the up-to-date CCAC guidelines

Responsibilities:

  • Daily monitoring of a variety of lab animal species (rodents and large animals) for food, water and health issues. Detected health issues (must be able to determine if the animal requires immediate attention) will be recorded and reported to the veterinarian as per SOP and the required treatment must be provided.
  • Cage changing, provision of food and water if required.
  • Provide technical assistance (basic techniques) with experimental treatment administration (injection, gavaging, topical ointment) and activities related to colony management.
  • Maintaining supplies in the housing areas (gowns, caps, masks, and gloves) as well as some housekeeping (removal of garbage and dirty laundry).
  • Assist in operating some of the physical plant equipment (autoclave).
