Part-Time (0.5FTE), 12-Month Fixed Term Contract
At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we are committed to achieving innovative, ground-breaking health and medical research that fundamentally improves the quality of life for all people.
The ANZDATA Registry provides data collection, analysis and reporting in the area of renal replacement therapy (dialysis and transplantation) and organ and tissue donation for Australia and New Zealand. Its fundamental purpose is to report on the incidence, prevalence and outcomes of dialysis and transplant treatment for patients with end stage renal disease.
The Epidemiology Fellow will be responsible for the completion of analyses and projects based on data from the ANZDATA Registry. This position will play a pivotal role in providing medical/scientific input into Registry operations, in particular to increase clinical epidemiology capacity with Australia and New Zealand, enrich quality assurance through the use of data.
This position will be available for commencement in February 2025.
About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertake investigations concerning the epidemiology of kidney replacement therapy (dialysis and transplantation), based on the ANZDATA and ANZOD Registries. This is a training position, and supervision will be provided while the incumbent develops their skills.
  • Provision of advice and (with supervision) analytical support for nephrology trainees undertaking projects utilising ANZDATA data
  • Increase clinical epidemiology capacity with Australia and New Zealand through involvement in Nephrology Advanced Trainee education
  • Support work on quality indicators through use of data such as work on dialysis capacity
  • Provide regular updates and 6 monthly reports to the ANZDATA executive and ANZSN council
  • When necessary present results at national and possibly international conferences and participate in publications in academic journals.
  • Assist with the management of requests for data and analyses by liaising with the requestor, providing clinical interpretation and formulation of questions(s), and identifying appropriate epidemiological and statistical approaches.
  • Provide clinical nephrological advice to ANZDATA staff to assist interpretation of questions and output and other Registry operations

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • A degree in Medicine, with postgraduate training / experience in nephrology, or a degree in Medicine, with postgraduate qualifications or equivalent experience in epidemiology, biostatistics or public health (one or other is essential)
  • Qualification in epidemiology, statistics, public health or equivalent. (desirable)
  • Postgraduate (specialist) qualification in nephrology / kidney medicine allowing registration as a consultant nephrologist. (desirable)
  • Research-based higher degree in a relevant field (desirable)
  • Understanding of Australian hospital systems and experience in working in a hospital setting, including ability to understand the issues around providing kidney replacement therapy
  • Ability to perform statistical analyses using commercially available statistical packages.
  • Experience in the interpretation of data, report writing or preparation of manuscripts for publication.
  • Knowledge of health systems, health problems and social/behavioural determinants of health, with particular emphasis on nephrological and renal transplant – related issues.
