DESCRIPTION

Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement.
This position has an approximate appointment length of three years.
Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.
POSITION
We are seeking a dynamic and innovative individual to join our academic team as Applied Geomatics and Data Science Teaching Staff. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality education and research in the fields of geomatics, spatial analysis, and data science in the context of our forestry, environmental and conservation sciences programs. This role offers an exciting opportunity to teach motivated undergraduate and graduate students, mentor course-based masters students, and collaborate with faculty members, government and industry partners on research projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A doctoral degree in environmental science, conservation science, geomatics, computer science, data science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated expertise in applied geomatics, spatial analysis, remote sensing, GIS, and data science in the context of environmental management and conservation.
- Experience in teaching at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, including course development and delivery.
- Experience with geospatial data processing, analysis, and visualization tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and open-source geomatics libraries in R or Python.
- Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and engage with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and research.
- Familiarity with emerging technologies and methodologies in geomatics and data science, such as UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) imagery, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and deep learning.
- Teaching experience in online or blended learning environments.
- Professional certifications in relevant areas of geomatics, GIS, or data science.

- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in applied geomatics, spatial analysis, remote sensing, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and data science including
- RENR 201: Introduction to Geomatic Techniques in Natural Resources Management.
- RENR 426: GIS Applications in Renewable Resources - Undergraduates
- RENR 446: Climates and Ecosystems
- RENR 526: GIS Applications in Renewable Resources - Graduates
- Development of a 1.5 credit module REN R 58X Advanced Topics in GIS and Geomatics
- Development of a 1.5 credit module REN R 58X Directed Research in GIS and Geomatics
- Develop and deliver innovative course materials, including lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions, to engage students effectively.
- Serve as primary advisor for course-based Masters student including the development of capstone projects in the field of forestry, environmental and conservation sciences.
- Contribute to the supervision of thesis-based MSc and PhD students on applied geomatics and data science aspects of their research.
- Contribute to curriculum development, ensuring alignment with industry trends and academic standards.
- Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and other academic activities to contribute to the overall development of the academic program.
- Stay abreast of advancements in applied geomatics, data science, and related fields through continuous professional development and networking.
