Job purpose
This fixed term post is to provide training for the post holder to undertake an Operating Department Practice Degree. This apprenticeship allows the student to work while they learn in the theatre environment. The successful applicants will have time allocated for service delivery,
The Apprentice Student Operating Department Practitioner will attend clinical placements within the Trust and attend locally delivered Canterbury Christchurch University sessions to acquire the theoretical aspects of this degree. This degree course in Operating Department Practice is a registered professional qualification with the Health and Care Professionals Council and practitioners become Allied Health Practitioners.
It is a requirement that following this supported programme that students will apply to work for the Trust for a minimum of two years to support future patient care delivery as an Operating Department Practitioner.
Contribute to the maintenance of consistent standards of patient care and Operating Department practice as agreed with the Theatre Team.
Contribute to the effective service delivery through the efficient and economical use of all resources in Theatre environment.
Completes patient documentation and records activity for the Theatre information system as required both electronically and written.
Record critical incidents and report to a Registered Theatre Practitioner.
Adheres to policies and procedures and contributes to the review and updating of operational policies and practice guidelines, the collection of activity data and maintenance of records.
Participates in experiencing out of hours surgery within the Department.
Contribute to a positive and supportive environment for all members of the Team.
Maintain confidentiality in matters relating to patients and staff.
Maintain and improve own knowledge and competence.

To undertake training to provide clinical support as a member of the theatre team in operating Theatres i.e.:
Setting up Theatre/Anaesthetic Room/Recovery Area
Operating and manipulating specialist equipment
Assisting in the collection, transfer and positioning of patients
Assisting the Surgical Team in Theatre and participating in this role under supervision during practice placement for this experience.
Setting up the anaesthetic room and equipment under supervision while on placement for anaesthetics.
Assisting the Anaesthetic Team in the delivery of anaesthesia as planned for the individual. Liaising with them to learn and understand the plan and to participate under direct supervision.
Assisting in the care of patients’ post operatively including airway management, pain control and full observations.
Cleaning in line with Infection Control Policy.
Maintaining stock levels of both consumable and non-consumables
Collection and maintenance of equipment and supplies
Patient care under the direction of the Registered Practitioner
Specimen handling, labelling and transportation
