Job Description
An opportunity to work with technical services teams across disciplines at King’s College London, supporting research and education whilst completing a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship
To learn and provide scientific and/or technical support covering a broad range of simple and/or routine tasks – based on specified methods, working under close supervision. The role holder will develop their technical support skills and knowledge, solving simple problems, and contributing to the creation of a stimulating, innovative and inclusive environment across the University enabling students and staff to thrive and develop.
The role holder will work within faculty and directorate technical teams on a rotating basis, developing their knowledge and skills, and learning a broad range of practical scientific techniques to support research and education activities at King’s.
The role holder is expected to complete all assessments in order to pass the Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship standard over a period of 24 months.
This post will be offered on a fixed term contract for 24 months from the start date.

Key Responsibilities
Assist in providing a service, under regular direct supervision whilst building the required competencies, where there are established standards and requirements of the service, seeking clarification where required to deliver the service
Learn to use equipment and techniques to provide the required services
Work to an agreed plan, occasionally being required to complete non-routine tasks
Help maintain supplies/stocks, local facilities and operations, ensuring efficient use of resources and undertaking receipt of goods, maintaining allocated equipment and wider facilities maintenance as required
Solve standard, day-to-day problems, reporting non-routine matters to personal mentor, or local supervisor
Assist in monitoring Health & Safety standards in laboratories and communicate any problems/issues to relevant technical staff
Assist in Stores – unpacking deliveries and distributing consumables to relevant staff
Assist with the maintenance and/or servicing of laboratory equipment
Develop understanding of how to interpret and evaluate routine data
Build good working relationships with staff and students, actively engaging with the immediate team, co-operating and working with other team members, providing basic guidance to new team members as required
Communicate, both orally and in writing, in a clear and precise fashion
Skills, knowledge and experience
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
1. A good standard of secondary education evidenced by five or more Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) qualifications including Maths, English and Science
2. Competent computer skills including Microsoft Office packages
3. Good communication skills – orally and in writing
4. Good time management and organisational skills
5. Flexible team-worker, being proactive and responsive to colleagues
6. Methodical approach to work with a good attention to detail, focused on solutions
7. An interest in science and technology, and a willingness to learn new techniques, follow instructions and apply learnt techniques/skills to the work context
Desirable criteria
1. Basic working knowledge of scientific or workshop equipment
2. Good numeracy skills, including basic arithmetical skills
3. Basic Health & Safety awareness and manual handling knowledge
