Our client is seeking to engage an APS3/4 Freedom of Information Officer/Paralegal.
Location: Australia Wide (All Capital Cities)
Contract Length: until December 20, 2024
Eligibility/Security Requirement: Applicants must be Australian Citizens

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work in the team responsible for processing Freedom of Information (FOI) requests under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) and will provide administrative and/or paralegal support to the FOI Team. From time to time the role may also require working on other matters relevant to the FOI Team and the CLU.
You will be supervised by the FOI Manager (EL1) and may be tasked/overseen on specific work by the FOI Officer (APS5) or other employees.
Duties are to be performed under appropriate direction and in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct, and upholding the APS Values, to achieve results in line with the corporate mission and goals of the Agency.
The duties of the role include:

Assist with the processing of FOI requests as required, including:

  • Prepare correspondence, including assist with the preparation of third-party consultation and FOI decisions
  • Undertake research, including searching Agency and legal databases
  • Maintain and update the Agency’s FOI databases, including uploading, coding and exporting documents in Nuix Discover
  • File documents in iManage in accordance with the FOI team naming convention
  • Liaise with Agency staff and external stakeholders in relation to FOI requests
  • With coaching and supervision, provide advice and guidance to FOI applicants, third parties and others in relation to FOI requests

Assist in ensuring that the Agency meets its FOI reporting obligations.
Other duties as required.

Paralegal duties include:

  • Conducting legal research, drafting legal notices and other legal correspondence
  • Assisting decision makers to make FOI decisions including drafting associated documentation

Selection Criteria:

  • An organised approach to work including an ability to manage competing tasks, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and oral form, combined with good interpersonal skills and an ability to build productive working relationships.
  • Self-motivation, attention to detail, accuracy and flexibility.
  • An awareness of the Agency and its aims and functions and the ability to quickly attain knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 and its application.
