Description:

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN/VETERINARY ASSISTANT

Stone Lodge Equine Services, based at Vinery Stud, is seeking a full-time Laboratory Technician/Veterinary Assistant for the upcoming breeding season. This position is seasonal with the opportunity for full-time stud work following the completion of the breeding season. We are located in the beautiful Upper Hunter, only 10 minutes from Scone and 2 hours from Newcastle.

The successful applicant will be responsible for and assist in:

  • the daily running of haematology, biochemistry, fibrinogen & SAA analysis of routine samples taken on the farm.
  • obtaining faecal egg counts and developing the parasite control program.
  • attending the daily mare vet rounds which includes administering sedations (under supervision), record keeping and assisting at the crush.
  • day-to-day cleaning and autoclaving of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • ordering, unpacking, labelling, and dispensing of regular pharmaceutical deliveries.

All training will be completed on the job; however, we are seeking someone who is eager to learn, works well within in a team and has a happy and bright disposition with some horse/thoroughbred knowledge.

Responsibilities:

In this role you will be required to:

  • check mares regularly overnight.
  • administer treatments to mares and foals.
  • assist the onsite vet when necessary.
  • monitor the wellbeing of both mares and foals.
  • work well alone and within a team

The skills necessary to succeed in this role include:

  • exceptional horse husbandry.
  • previous experience foaling down mares.
  • demonstrated knowledge in dealing with normal and abnormal foalings.
  • excellent judgement and rational decision-making.
  • accurate record keeping

The successful applicant will be responsible for and assist in:

In this role you will be required to:

  • coordinate with the Operations Manager for movements of mares arriving for cover and departing.
  • oversee and actively manage the care and treatment of mares visiting the farm for various periods of time.
  • assist with vetting and the preparation of mares for cover.
  • work closely with the stallion team as well as autonomously

The skills necessary to succeed in this role include:

  • exceptional horse husbandry.
  • previous experience caring for and managing treatments for mares.
  • excellent communication, judgement, and rational decision-making.
  • accurate record keeping
