SUMMARY
The Division of Public Safety and Security conducts all police and security operations at the university (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Flint) and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS offers an integrated approach to safety and security, partnering across the university and helping everyone in the U-M community take charge of their safety.

This position is crucial in ensuring the safety and security of the University of Michigan’s facilities. You will be primarily at Michigan Medicine, located at 1500 E. Medical Center, Ann Arbor, MI, but may be deployed for similar assignments throughout the University of Michigan campus. This position involves monitoring and operating weapons detection systems, including safeguarding the employees, visitors, and guests.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*
- High school or GED equivalent
- A minimum of ten years of experience in law enforcement, and MCOLES certifiable OR a minimum of ten years of armed governmental service or armed security (PA 330 certification training will be provided)
- Prior experience with conflict resolution, de-escalation, and active engagement with the public
- Demonstrated commitment to public safety, excellent communication and organizational skills
- Prior experience making decisions and acting quickly in stressful situations
- Ability to exercise independent, sound judgment and remain calm in emergency situations
- Proficient in public and interpersonal relations
- Willingness to undergo training on relevant software and techniques
Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough security screening of individuals, vehicles, packages, and other items using electronic and physical methods as required
- Operate weapons detection systems and various electronic security devices to ensure thorough screening processes
- Assist visitors by providing answers to inquiries and offering clear directions within the facility while prioritizing security measures
- Keep a meticulous daily activity log documenting incidents and promptly prepare detailed incident reports
- Confiscate illegal weapons discovered during duty, ensuring the safety of the medical facilities
- Temporarily confiscate and store items that could be used as a weapon per policy
- Respond to immediate threats without delay
- Prevent unauthorized access to assigned facilities
- Undertake other duties as assigned related to visitor management
