POSITION SUMMARY

The Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic colleague for a position in the Master of Architecture Program as a full-time Assistant/Associate Professor https://architecture.indiana.edu/academics/index.html) ,to begin August 1, 2024. Ideal candidates should possess an excellent architectural design portfolio, along with expertise in at least one of the following categories: (1) innovative material and/or fabrication research, (2) history and theory of architecture and urban design, or (3) sustainability in the built environment. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate cross-disciplinary approaches that integrate both art and architecture.
In addition to service through committees, the successful candidate will teach graduate-level architectural design studios, along with lecture and seminar courses corresponding to their area of focus. The successful candidate must also demonstrate potential to produce scholarship through publications, exhibitions, or symposia with national or international recognition.
The primary location of this position is Columbus, Indiana. The J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program is housed in the landmarked Republic Building, which is one of over eighty significant works of architecture in the city of Columbus. Faculty members will also occasionally travel to Indiana University’s main campus in Bloomington, where various programs and administrative offices of the Eskenazi School are located. The Eskenazi School (https://eskenazi.indiana.edu/) is dedicated to developing a faculty body composed of diverse scholars and practitioners. We seek a forward-thinking colleague who wishes to be part of an innovative program in architecture. Our curriculum is uniquely based on twin studio experiences of architectural design and fine art. We believe that cross-pollination of allied disciplines creates fertile ground for the development of the imagination. Thus, we seek a colleague who is committed to interdisciplinary engagement and the parallel pursuit of art and architecture.
Furthermore, we seek candidates who can provide collegial leadership in a team-based environment. Qualified candidates will participate in strategic planning for the program, student advising, NAAB Accreditation, and must show willingness to collaborate with community organizations and partners. We are especially interested in leaders who can prepare students to respond to the complex cultural, social, technological, and environmental challenges of our contemporary era.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of Master’s degree in Architecture (MArch) or Urban Design (MUD)
  • Demonstrable interest and/or experience in cross-disciplinary work or research that integrates disciplines in art and architecture.
  • Expertise in architectural design and architectural design studio instruction, in addition to one or more of the following categories:
  • Innovative material and/or fabrication research
  • History and theory of architecture and urban design
    Sustainability in the built environment

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D or D.Des related to an area of focus listed above
  • MFA or extensive experience with an artistic practice (in addition to architectural design qualifications listed above)
  • Professional licensure
  • Extensive experience at a nationally or internationally recognized design studio
  • Prior experience teaching at a recognized institution of higher learning in art, architecture, and design

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching architectural design studio across all three years of the M.Arch program
  • Teaching lecture and seminar courses in at least one of the following areas:
  • Materials and Methods
  • History and Theory of Architecture and Urban Design
  1. Environmental Systems and Sustainability
  • Fulfill an annual course-load of 12 credit-hours during the 10-month academic year.
  • Assist in shaping and realizing the central goals of the program’s five-year strategic plan.
  • Serve on program, school, or college-level committees as needed.
  • Assist with the NAAB accreditation process in coordination with the program Director, Assistant Director, faculty, and staff.
  • Work in collaboration with community organizations and partners to expand the program’s impact and outreach, both locally and regionally.
  • Depending on the area of focus, collaborate with the Instructional Shop Manager to embed innovative use of materials, technology, and fabrication in the curricular sequence.
  • Help orchestrate travel abroad studios and initiatives, as well as lectures and exhibitions hosted by the program.
  • Advise individual students and student-led organizations.
  • Collaborate with the Graduate Recruitment Coordinator, Director of Communications and Marketing, and fellow faculty members as a participant in events and activities related to marketing and recruitment.
  • Actively engage in scholarly work and creative activity through publications, exhibitions, symposia, or other nationally/internationally recognized forums.
  • Uphold the Eskenazi School’s Mission and Values as outlined in current Governance Documents (https://eskenazi.indiana.edu/faculty/faculty-governance.html).
  • Fulfill the requirements of the Eskenazi School’s Promotion and Tenure Procedures (Appendix 1) for tenure-track and tenured faculty members, including providing evidence of excellence in research/creative activity, teaching, and service.
