Description:

THE POSITION

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) invites qualified persons to apply for an immediate temporary opening (up to six months) position in the Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering Division of EBMUD’s Engineering and Construction Department. The Assistant Engineer (Mechanical) will perform a variety of professional engineering assignments related to the planning, design, construction, and operation of a large municipal water supply system.
The ideal candidate for this position will have project engineering experience including planning, budgeting, scheduling, project development and control, inter-discipline coordination and hands-on design, selection, and specification of process and control systems related to water or wastewater treatment and distribution or other industries (such as petroleum or chemical industries) which use similar process equipment or facilities.

Major performance areas are:

  • Project Planning and Management - involves identification of project objectives, scope, feasibility, justifications, milestones and completion schedule, coordination of resources, administering contracts, and preparation of supporting documentation.
  • Mechanical Design - involves the application of engineering knowledge to conduct site investigations, prepare mechanical designs and specifications, and perform engineering analyses.
  • Technical Support - involves responding to verbal and written requests for engineering inspections and evaluations, providing technical support to other departments and engineers, and reviewing contractor and vendor document submittals.
  • Administration - involves assisting in preparation and monitoring of budget, participating in various committees and coordination of capital projects,
  • Written and Oral Communication - involves preparation of memos, letters, and engineering reports; conducting and participating in meetings, presenting papers, proposals, reports, and recommendations to a wide variety of audiences including District Engineering Operations and Maintenance staff, public agencies, government bodies, professional organizations, and members of the general public.
  • Computer Software Applications - involves the use and application of computer software tools in the performance of a variety of engineering activities ranging from project scheduling to spreadsheet-based economic analyses to hydraulic modeling.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. A bachelor’s degree in an engineering curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or a California Engineer in Training Certificate; and,
  2. Two years* of professional civil, electrical, mechanical, control systems, geotechnical, sanitary, or structural engineering experience, at a level comparable to or higher than EBMUD’s Junior Engineer classification, after obtaining the education outlined above.
  3. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.

  4. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.

  • A graduate level degree in an accredited engineering curriculum may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
