Description:

Overall Purpose of The Job
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the ships to which they have been assigned and collaborating as a member of the Ship Management Team operating to Company procedures and best ship management practices.
Through a shared responsibility of safety and care, ensure assigned vessels are operated with absolute regard to safety of life at sea and protection of the environment at all times. Understudy and assist the Fleet Manager to monitor the service delivery to V. Ships customers and be a part of the decision making process that ensure the Customer is provided with a full functioning ship and crew thereby enabling top quality operational performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for planned maintenance systems of assigned vessels, ensure the job descriptions and maintenance intervals assigned to all machineries are as per manufacturer’s manual, and that repairs history / spares consumed are correctly recorded.
  • In consultation with line management, responsible for reporting to Class of any damages, defects, or equipment failure could invalidate the conditions for which Class has been assigned.
  • Responsible for work planning and formulation of action lists with the Ships’ Command to ensure the vessel is maintained in accordance with Client requirements. Provide regular reports to all interested parties as to progress of works.
  • Collaborating with the shipboard team and the HSEQ Superintendent, prepare vessels for inspection/audit by PSC, Flag, Oil Major and similar bodies as a shared responsibility. Responsible for follow-up of deficiencies arising out of the preparation and inspection through until final closure. Business Acumen
  • Work cooperatively with relevant members of the Fleet Cell to coordinate all information required for the preparation of the vessels’ running cost budget. Maintain strict control of all aspects of vessel expenditure, ensure vessel expenditure is accrued to vessel accounts and accurately reported on, and take appropriate action to bring costs to budget level. Any potential unbudgeted expenditure must be flagged to the Fleet Manager without delay. Client Relationship Management
  • To serve as the first contact point for the assigned vessels and liaise with Clients on day-to-day operations of assigned vessels. (Unless otherwise specified).
  • Provide timely and accurate reports to Clients regarding the management, expenditure and condition of the vessel as per the Management Agreement.
  • Participate in the weekly Customer Temperature Dashboard review meetings, collaborating with the shore team to formulate robust action plans to drive improvement in performance of office and customer KPIs.

Project Management

  • Plan, control and execute all activities connected with maintenance, repairs, dry-docking, conversion or modification of assigned vessels.
  • Plan, control and execute all activities connected to class and flag state survey and certificate requirements and build and maintain effective liaison with relevant authorities.

Operational Management:

  • Monitor vessel performance trends including speed, fuel and lubricating oil consumptions, and implement timely remedial actions where these are outside agreed or expected parameters.
  • Prepare ‘visitation plans’ to gain thorough familiarization of assigned Vessels, equipment, operating parameters, challenges and safety culture onboard. Following inspection, issue reports detailing vessels general condition, repairs and maintenance, crew performance, safety, environmental protection, remedial actions required.
  • Using best endeavours, and taking the trading pattern of the vessel into consideration, conduct ship visits annually that include a voyage so that full evaluation of the operational machinery, various onboard operations, and onboard safety management is carried out.
  • Authorise without delay all undisputed vessel orders for stores, spares, repairs and survey within financial limit of authority. Take appropriate action to ensure the vessel remains adequately stocked for safe and efficient operation and obtain the Client’s approval for any unbudgeted expenditure.
  • Collaborate with the assigned HSEQ Superintendent to control and monitor the risk for assigned vessels and to act as a member of the risk assessment team for shipboard procedures and operations when called upon to do so.

• Ensure that Management team is immediately advised of any incident or untoward happening likely to affect the performance of the vessel. • Liaise with the insurance manager / department on the participation and submission to the adjusters of all data relative to claims with underwriters or P&I clubs.

People Management

  • Authorise selection process of Senior Officers for assigned Vessels.
  • Brief Senior Officers during office visits on VMS, fleet requirements, vessel work plan etc. Ensure they have an understanding of the V Ships values and are clear about the standards of performance expected and support available from the team ashore.
  • Build and maintain a professional and effective working relationship with senior ship staff to influence the development of a strong safety culture.
  • Conduct Senior Officer Performance Appraisals in accordance with VMS procedures and as play an active role in their personal development.

Responsibilities:

IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE RESPONSIBILITIES, ASSISTANT FLEET MANAGERS WOULD ALSO BE EXPECTED TO CARRY OUT THE FOLLOWING:

  • Support and lead the Fleet Cell in the Fleet Manager’s absence, when nominated to do so.
  • Support the Fleet Manager’s engagement with Clients.
  • Take every opportunity, when liaising with customers, to promote V Group services and proactively pitch for relevant business opportunities.
  • Provide support, mentoring and guidance to Fleet Superintendents and Assistant Fleet Superintendents and encourage their career development.
  • To be an advocate of SHIPSURE and ensure it is properly utilized within the Fleet Cell. Support and assist colleagues where required and provide constructive feedback to aid continuous improvement of the system.
  • Be a Subject Matter Expert and promote continuous learning opportunities within the Fleet Cell.
    • Be a Values Advocate and be prepared to challenge where the values are not displayed in others. Skills, Qualification and Experience Essential • Recognised marine qualification and/ or relevant sea-experience.

• Experience as a Superintendent. • Good communication (oral and written) skills.

  • Chief Engineer or Master Mariner Certificate of Competency or a Degree in Naval Architecture
