We are looking for an experienced and resilient professional to fill the role of Assistant Manager (Government Relations and Policy) at the ACS. The ACS was established in July 2021, as a partnership of the Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO, Geoscience Australia, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The Bureau of Meteorology is the accountable authority.
Established as a response to the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements, the ACS is a virtual agency that integrates and delivers data, models, platforms, and advice to support natural disaster and climate risk management policy and decision making. Our work aims to meet the immediate and future data and intelligence needs of agencies who hold the responsibilities for coordination of a national response before, during and after natural disasters, and to better prepare Australian communities and industries against future natural disasters. We are also building climate risk analytics and natural hazard capabilities that can be drawn on by other Commonwealth Government agencies and target decision makers working in disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation planning.
The Assistant Manager (Government Relations and Policy) at ACS will be responsible for providing coordinated, expert policy advice to executives and ministers; ensuring timely and considered responses on the ACS’s behalf to requests for information and input to cross-agency government briefings and submissions; and assisting in overseeing governance and secretariat services to key committees and decision-making bodies of the ACS. We are looking for candidates with policy and government expertise, people management capability, stakeholder engagement experience, commitment to good governance practices, and high-level written and oral communication skills. Experience and knowledge of climate change adaptation and disaster prevention, response, relief, recovery, and resilience, or the demonstrated ability to upskill in these areas, are highly desirable.
Reporting to the Manager (Governance and Government Relations), the Assistant Manager (Government Relations and Policy) will play an important role in delivering practical and valued services for decision-makers, working closely with the four ACS delivery partners, other key climate and disaster stakeholders, and external service providers. As the ACS is a virtual agency with a complex and dynamic operating environment, the Assistant Manager will need to the ability to work collaboratively with staff across all ACS partner agencies, and to communicate complex concepts effectively.
