Description:

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applicants for one or more positions in computational biology on assistant professor and/or associate professor levels.
For a hiring at the level of associate professor, applicants are expected to have demonstrated the ability to direct independent research projects and obtain external funding. An appointment as an assistant professor lasts for three years, after which a permanent position on associate professorship level is expected to be opened, for which the assistant professor can apply.

We are looking for candidates with a PhD degree in the fields Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or Mathematics and strong expertise and a research track record in one or more of the following areas:

  • OMICS data analysis
  • Functional genetic analysis
  • Multi-omics integration and systems biology
  • Bioinformatics algorithm development.

A successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a clear research vision of how to facilitate state-of-the-art experimental approaches with a dry lab and how to collaborate with existing experimental and bioinformatics work groups at the relevant departments across the university. Furthermore, a successful candidate should show a strong potential for developing an internationally outstanding research profile. We also expect a successful candidate to be able to teach core computer science subjects and to play a leading role in shaping the education profile of bioinformatics and computational biomedicine.
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Danish is not a requirement: more English than Danish is used when teaching in computer science, and more than half of the research staff members in computer science have international backgrounds. Successful applicants will be offered Danish courses by the university.

IMADA, located at SDU’s main campus in Odense, is a rapidly growing department offering excellent research environments through our research sections:

  • Algorithms
  • Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Programming Languages

  • Laboratory for Coherent Education and Learning
  • Topology, Algebra, Analysis and Geometry.

Each research section spans a range of research groups and centres, and the positions in computational biology are expected to be part of our Bioinformatics group, led by Professor Richard Röttger, within the Data Science and Statistics section.
In addition to BSc, MSc and PhD education in Computer Science, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, IMADA offers BSc in Artificial Intelligence, an MSc in Data Science and, together with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, an international MSc degree in Computational Biomedicine.
IMADA and SDU offer a modern, inclusive, international and interdisciplinary working environment with state-of-the-art facilities and a strong tradition for collaboration across departments and faculties as well as with national and international partners from academia and industry. The Faculty of Health has recently been relocated to SDU’s main campus in close proximity to IMADA. Within a few years the Odense University Hospital will also move to the main campus, supporting further synergies and stronger ties between the units. The SDU eScience Center, also part of IMADA, is a national provider of HPC infrastructure for research, and thus offers access to attractive computational resources for life sciences.
Odense, the third largest city in Denmark, provides family-friendly living conditions, with the perfect combination of a historic city centre with an urban and vibrant feel and yet close proximity to beaches and recreational areas. Its location on the island of Funen is ideal with easy access to the larger cities and airports across Denmark.
