Based in Hartford, CT, the assistant portfolio analyst (APA) will report directly to the portfolio manager, and work as part of a collaborative portfolio management team responsible for delivering sustainable income and total return for HIMCO client portfolios inclusive of the Hartford’s General Account covering over $7.4 billion in tax-exempt and taxable Municipal AUM.
The APA is expected to support portfolio manager and trader related to risk reporting, portfolio construction, ad hoc market and positioning analysis, order entries, and presentations. Over time the APA is expected to develop a proficient understanding of fixed income and municipal market dynamics and how they relate to portfolio management, trading, and credit fundamentals. In addition, the APA is expected to collaborate with internal client representatives providing market data and help articulate portfolio activities. Finally, the APA will be expected to develop a strong understanding of economic trends and how they are anticipated to impact strategies being employed by the Municipal Team.

Responsibilities

  • On behalf of the Municipal group, update, produce and enhance weekly and ad hoc risk management reports and models utilizing market and internal data to help monitor portfolio positioning and relative value.
  • Familiarize and integrate Black Rock Aladdin, Bloomberg, Morgan Matrix, & Reuters TM3 with excel.
  • Learn Institutional Client and General Account guidelines to help the team identify bonds available for sale, or collateral purposes among other tax sensitive considerations with the objective of optimizing return on capital.
  • Learn and eventually lead the portfolio construction process, by reconciling municipal team strategies with Institutional and general account client guidelines and objectives with new issue and secondary market opportunities.
  • Work directly with portfolio manager and trader to generate trade orders.
  • Assist in the development of topical presentations or special research projects to senior management.
  • Develop a strong ongoing dialogue with portfolio manager, trader and analysts to evaluate rationale and strategy behind each trade.
  • Update and run sector attribution including other models such as relative value, rate lock, and sector radar.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with HIMCO Sector teams resources with the objective of improving existing risk measurements and optimizing decision making.

Qualifications:

  • B.A. in Finance or Economics
  • Technologically savvy, with strong Excel skills required
  • Strong interest in and desire to learn about capital markets
  • VB, Python knowledge a plus but not essential
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills; not afraid to take risks
  • Very collaborative and teamwork spirit
  • Is a self-starter, possesses a high level of composure and attention to detail
  • Must be intellectually curious

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$68,320 - $102,480
