DESCRIPTION

The Department of Language Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences offers courses in English language, academic writing, and literature. It is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Professor to join its program starting in Fall 2024. The successful candidates will teach critical analysis and English composition at the undergraduate level as part of the First Year Experience (FYE) program, designed to connect first-year students to their academic goals within ZU’s academic environment. With an interdisciplinary framework, the course is built on a student-centered approach and prioritizes activity-based learning.
The program helps students develop an understanding and recognition of the intricate, enjoyable, and organized characteristics of language and communication. Students learn to think critically, articulate complex ideas effectively, acquire sharp analytical skills and excellent writing abilities, and engage with diverse perspectives. The interdisciplinary approach, combined with seminars, workshops, and personalized feedback, equips students with invaluable skills that are appreciated in various careers in the UAE and internationally.
Successful candidates are expected to teach critical analysis and English composition to undergraduate students, as well as contribute to course material development and curriculum assessment. They should provide academic advising and support to students as required. Additionally, they are expected to conduct and publish high-quality research in their field, seek funding for research projects, and mentor undergraduate students in research. Active participation in departmental, college, and university committees and meetings is also required, along with engagement in service activities such as event organization, advisory board service, student mentoring, and collaboration with external stakeholders to promote the university’s objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in English studies, applied linguistics, rhetoric, and composition, or a closely related field from an accredited university that is or can be recognized by the UAE Ministry of Education.
Previous university teaching experience and excellence in undergraduate teaching in English or composition
Strong background in critical analysis, English composition, and student-centred teaching methodologies
Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative teaching practices.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
