Description:

SUNY Cortland’s History Department seeks applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in History/Adolescence Education Social Studies at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2024.
The successful candidate joins a dynamic and growing History Department with more than 230 undergraduate majors and twelve tenured or tenure-track faculty members. Its robust curricular offerings support undergraduate majors in history and adolescence education in social studies as well as an online graduate master’s degree in history. SUNY Cortland strives to attract faculty who can contribute to a campus that embraces diversity, practices inclusion, and fosters a supportive environment for all individuals. Department faculty are dedicated teachers, productive scholars, and engaged members of the campus community, including support for allied programs in Africana Studies, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, International Studies, Latino and Latin American Studies, Native American Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The History Department has a well-established reputation for excellence in preparing secondary social studies teachers with its unique focus and commitment to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning of history (SoTL).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD. in History, or related field relevant to adolescent social studies education with substantial graduate-level training and coursework in the discipline of history.
  • Experience and demonstrated effectiveness teaching college-level history and/or secondary social studies teacher preparation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social studies teacher preparation and history education, seen in activities such as: research and publications in the Scholarship on the Teaching and Learning of History; engagement in efforts to promote history learning in grades 7-12; secondary-level social studies teaching experience; experience in grades 7-12 teacher preparation; and meeting certification and accreditation requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Secondary-level social studies teaching experience.
  • Leadership experience or potential in secondary social studies teacher preparation, and meeting certification and accreditation requirements.
  • PhD. in history, with specialties that contribute to the department’s breadth of offerings and opportunities for students.
  • Teaching experience and research that demonstrates ability to contribute to the department’s emphasis on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning of History.
  • Experience relevant to preparing teacher candidates to work effectively with diverse student populations, and to meet evolving expectations for social studies teaching and learning.
  • Current or past teacher certification in secondary social studies.
