POSITION SUMMARY

The Department of Biology invites full-time faculty candidates for tenure-track Assistant Professor position within the School of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering beginning August 2024.
Full-time faculty at UIW are expected to teach four courses in the fall semester and four courses in the spring semester. In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission. Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service, and professional activities.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong background in biology discipline;
  • Demonstrated excellence and proficiency in undergraduate teaching and research in the area of expertise;
  • Effective instructional delivery;
  • Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Strong commitment to collaborative and cooperative instruction, advising, and mentoring a diverse population of underserved students including but not exclusive to first-generation college students, veterans, and racially and ethnically diverse students;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of instructional technology;
  • Ability to actively engage students in the learning process;
  • Ability to conduct respectful relationships with students both in and outside the classroom;
  • Ability to work collegially and productively within the university community;
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;

REQUIRED EDUCATION

Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related discipline.

REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE

Successful teaching experience in the field at the undergraduate level, as evidenced by peer and/or student reviews.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Priority will be given to candidates with two (2) or more years of teaching at the undergraduate level and post-doctoral experience in biological sciences, with a preference for physiology, neuroscience, or closely related fields.
  • Experience teaching diverse student populations and evidence of teaching or service reflecting values of social justice and/or Catholic social teachings.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Participate in curriculum development and advancement of the respective program.
  • Prepare course outlines based on approved departmental syllabi.
  • Prepare and deliver consistent, interactive undergraduate course lectures in introductory and advanced biology, physiology, and neuroscience consistent with the needs of the department.
  • Develop and teach at least one course in the area of expertise.
  • Work collaboratively with departmental faculty to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
  • Prepare timely and meaningful exams, projects, and assessments for assigned courses.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students of respective major; provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours.
  • Conduct respectful relationships with faculty, staff, and students both in and outside the classroom.
  • Maintain active undergraduate research program and publish in the field of expertise.
  • Actively collaborate with students and faculty within the department, from other disciplines and the University’s health professional schools to support the university mission.
  • Provide service to the respective department, college, university, community, and profession.
  • Adhere to UIW Faculty Handbook policies and processes including timely record keeping of student activities, fair and equitable evaluation of student performance, and timely feedback to students regarding their performance in the course.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
