We are seeking individuals to join our Nursing Department team that are fully committed to transformational, culturally responsive education in a collegial and collaborative student-centered environment.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

This posting is to fill two (2) full-time, tenure track positions teaching Nursing within the Nursing/Health Science department. These positions will provide instruction and instructional support for the following:

  • Medical surgical nursing, Instructional
  • Willingness to be remediated in a specialty area of nursing, for example, obstetrics, pediatrics, or psychiatric mental health, within six months of hire.We value the ability to serve students from a broad range of cultural heritages, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, abilities, and orientations. Nursing Instructors will develop and guide the teaching learning process by adopting teaching strategies to deliver theoretical content to promote student engagement.2. Nursing Instructors will provide clinical instruction in the acute, long-term, and community care and virtual settings to coach students in learning clinical reasoning and judgement.3. Implement evidenced based skill building in the nursing lab setting4. Assist in curriculum development, revision, and evaluation.5. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours6. Participate and collaborate in nursing team, department, and division meetings7. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES1. Recent clinical knowledge of medical surgical nursing.2. Ability to teach in clinical areas as assigned, utilizing a variety of successful teaching techniques.3. An understanding of current nursing issues and trends. Willingness to actively participate and contribute to changes in the Nursing program at department and team meetings4. A commitment to staying abreast of new trends in nursing and the clinical setting5. A commitment to supporting gender and ethnically diverse students enrolled in nursing6. Ability to ensure consistent and appropriate monitoring of student progress in the clinical setting7. Ability to use teaching methods that engage all students actively in their own learning and encourage them to learn problem solving skills8. Ability to teach in both in-person and virtual environments9. Ability to adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of students10. Ability to assist students in the acquisition, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge and skills in both clinical and virtual settings11. Willingness to work with both faculty and staff in a spirit of collegiality at department, division, college, and District levels12. Ability to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one’s own pedagogy and modify techniques to engage students13. A commitment to the goals and ideals of the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the mission of the community collegeQUALIFICATIONSMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSMaster’s degree in nursingORBachelor’s in nursing AND Master’s in health education or health scienceORThe equivalent OR the minimum qualifications set by the Board of Nursing, whichever is higher.In addition, the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requires the following;REGULATION Section 1425(c) An instructor shall meet the following minimum qualifications:1. Master’s or higher degree, which includes course work in nursing, education or administration.2. Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing areas (geriatrics, medical-surgical, mental-health/psychiatric nursing, obstetrics, or pediatrics) to which the faculty is assigned, that can be met either one of the following:a. One (1) year’s continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated nursing area; ORb. One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrate clinical competency.3. Validated clinical competence. “Clinically competent” as defined in section 1420(d), which means that a nursing program faculty member possesses and exercises the degree of learning, skill, care and experience ordinarily possessed and exercised by staff level registered nurses of the nursing area to which the faculty member is assigned.4. The equivalent of one (1) year’s teaching experience can be met by:a. teaching in a pre- or post-licensure registered nursing program for one academic year; ORb. completion of a post-baccalaureate registered nursing educational course that includes practice in teaching registered nursing given by an accredited college or nursing school. The course includes teaching strategies, course outline and lesson plan development, evaluation, and practice teachingDESIRED QUALIFICATIONS1. A minimum of two-years, full-time experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse assigned to geriatrics, medical surgical nursing.2. Previous teaching experience in programs accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Education for Nursing (ACEN)EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTSThe person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:
  • Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
  • Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)
  • Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment
  • Employment verification(s) (for salary placement on faculty salary schedule)Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see job posting qualifications section for details).
