Description:

The School of Music at Montana State University seeks a talented teacher and scholar of music technology for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level beginning in August 2024. The School of Music is an academic unit in the College of Arts & Architecture at Montana State University, a land-grant university that prioritizes educational access and opportunity. We seek a music technologist interested in innovative pedagogy and musical approaches encompassing a wide range of genres and musical traditions who will work with colleagues in serving student-centered goals at a land-grant university.
The successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively, promote and mentor undergraduate research and creative activities, and support diversity in teaching and scholarship. The School of Music values a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in scholarship, teaching, and service. The Music Technology Program is a broad-based dynamic degree program that incorporates a comprehensive spectrum of music, sound, and audio practices, including music composition, electronic and visual music, recording, sound reinforcement, sound synthesis, sound design for film/theater/gaming, audio for film/video and multimedia, film scoring, interdisciplinary collaboration, song writing, music business, and technology performance, among other areas.
The successful candidate will join a talented, supportive, and collaborative group of colleagues who excel in teaching, creative activities, research, and outreach. Duties will include teaching within a broad-based undergraduate degree program in music technology and other areas as determined by the needs of the School of Music. It is expected that the successful candidate will maintain a scholarship profile consistent with the expectations of a very high research university and its associated expectations for retention, tenure, and promotion. Service obligations to the School, College, University, Community, and Profession will also be expected.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS – EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Doctorate in Music Technology, Technology Performance, Sound Art, Composition (with focus in Electronic Music), or a related field or Master’s degree with equivalent professional experience and accomplishment in the music industry. ABD individuals are welcome to apply so long as the Doctorate in Music is obtained prior to the employment start date.
  • Experience teaching Music Technology at the college level.
  • Demonstrated potential in research/scholarship to gain tenure and promotion at a very high research university.
  • An interest in innovative pedagogy and musical approaches encompassing a wide range of genres and musical traditions

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Experience as a teacher of record in music technology courses.
  • Experience teaching Technology Performance.
  • Demonstrated success in Music Technology research/scholarship.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborative scholarship and pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated success in innovative pedagogy and musical approaches encompassing a wide range of genres and musical traditions
