The Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland in College Park is seeking to fill two tenure track faculty positions associated with how biotic and abiotic stresses associated with climate change impact plant growth and development and plant competition in plant communities. The first position (#129406) is focused on investigating the molecular, genetic, ecological, and/or cellular responses to abiotic stresses associated with a changing climate and the translation of research results to ameliorate stress effects on plant growth in agricultural systems and/or land- or aquatic-based plant communities. The second position (#103646) is focused on the impact of biotic and abiotic stressors associated with climate change on native and invasive plant competitiveness in plant communities, and molecular and genetic, and cultural approaches to control invasive species proliferation.
The Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland – College Park invites applications at the rank of Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist – Invasive Species Plant Biologist and Extension Specialist – Tenure Track Faculty 12 Month Appointment (60% Research, 40% Extension) #103646 from outstanding early-career scientists from a broad range of disciplines. The successful candidate is expected to build and maintain a cutting-edge, externally-funded research program that focuses on invasive plant competitiveness in agricultural and urban environments. The Department is particularly interested in candidates who would investigate the impact of biotic and abiotic stressors (associated with climate change) on native and invasive plant species and communities, and molecular and genetic approaches to control invasive species such as reducing herbicide resistance, reducing invasive species resilience and fitness, and/or promoting sterility in invasive species populations. The candidate is expected to identify and promote ways to control invasive species exclusive of herbicides to the Maryland agriculture communities and the public. In addition, the candidate will also participate in undergraduate and/or graduate instruction. Questions may be sent to Dr. Mark Carroll, Faculty Search Chair at mcarroll@umd.edu
Additional Duties: Faculty members are expected to serve the professional community through review of publications and participation on competitive grant panels, in national and international professional meetings, and other activities. It is also expected that this individual will participate in other duties and committees as required by the department, college, and university; and interact with organizations representing their clientele groups in the state and region.
Minimum: Applicants must have a doctorate degree before the start date in a relevant area, a publication record commensurate with their experience, and evidence of a commitment to extension and teaching excellence.
Cover Letter highlighting relevant experience Curriculum Vitae Summary of Research Plans (maximum two pages) Teaching and/or Extension Philosophy Statement (one page; and student evaluations are appreciated) Diversity and Inclusivity Statement Contact information for five or more references. Because the university, college and department are committed to increasing campus diversity and promoting inclusion across campus, application materials should address how a candidate will contribute to fostering a diverse and inclusive scientific community.
Note email address of 3 professional references will be required as part of the application process.
