DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Geography & Planning in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto (St. George campus) invites applications for a 2-year Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Urban Planning with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2024, or shortly thereafter.
Applicants must have earned a professional Master’s Degree in Planning, and a Ph.D. in Planning, or a closely related field by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. Applicants must also have expertise in some combination of the following theoretical, methodological, and/or topical areas: planning theory, environmental policy and planning, urban form and design, experiential/service learning, qualitative research methods, professional communication skills. Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (or eligibility for membership) will be considered an asset but is not required.
We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures in planning. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be provided by strong letters of reference; teaching awards and accolades; presentations at significant, discipline-relevant conferences; and in a teaching dossier which includes teaching accomplishments; a statement of teaching philosophy; sample course syllabi in Planning or relevant Geography courses; and teaching evaluations.
Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of courses that may include introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in urban planning for our graduate MSc. in Planning program and undergraduate programs in geography. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake normal departmental service duties including various committee memberships, potential roles on undergraduate and graduate thesis committees, identifying possible internship opportunities in the area of planning, and contributing to the development of the planning curriculum.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
