TITLE AND POSITION SUMMARY:

The Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU) in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time, contingent term (until March 31, 2025) academic position in the area of clinical veterinary parasitology. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching).
The anticipated start date is: October 1, 2024 or an earlier mutually agreed upon date.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ACHIEVEMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE APPOINTMENT:

  • Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) and advanced clinical training in veterinary parasitology, with board certification or eligibility in the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (Parasitology).
  • Previous diagnostic experience, a strong background in molecular diagnostics and a graduate degree are considered assets.
  • The applicant must be licensed or eligible for immediate licensure in the Province of Alberta.
  • Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) normally requires evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness or competency in teaching and learning, an awareness of how to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning practices, participation in reflective practice, and professional learning activities related to teaching and learning. Commitment to, or experience with, defining learning goals, supporting student learning activities and engagement, and creating assessment strategies may also be required.
  • Engagement in the research and scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and curriculum design of the relevant discipline or field as well as engaging in other scholarly professional or creative activities that strengthens and informs the academic staff member’s knowledge base and expertise is required.

Responsibilities:

This position will have 90% of its time focused on diagnostics and teaching and 10% dedicated to service. This position will be located at the Clinical Skills Building (CSB) at the Spy Hill Campus. The successful candidate will be responsible for the establishment, daily oversight, and future growth of a parasitology lab as part of the expansion of UCVM’s Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU). The incumbent will work closely with the Director DSU, the Operations Manager DSU, and professional and technical staff to deliver expanded livestock diagnostic testing in Alberta, while also providing service to the broader veterinary community and contributing to the enhancement of teaching and research in the faculty. The successful candidate will serve as the subject matter expert and will be responsible for the scientific accuracy, completeness, promptness, and generation of lab results. Activities will include, but are not limited to, physical set-up of the lab, purchasing of capital equipment, budgeting, test development, day-to-day supervision of technical staff, workflow coordination, oversight of routine testing, result interpretation, client communication, quality assurance and documentation, and mentoring.
Teaching may include clinical and laboratory teaching of undergraduate DVM students.
