Description:

The Associate Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with a high academic rank who has demonstrated a sustained record of effectiveness in teaching, research including scholarly publications, and service appropriate to the discipline. The Associate Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head which may include serving as an academic advisor. The Associate Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.
Description of Primary Duties

The position is a 12-month, tenure track faculty appointment with administrative duties (Program Director) with overall responsibility for:

  • Administration of the Physician Assistant program, including budget and resource management
  • Curriculum evaluation and development/program development
  • Student admissions, advisement and evaluation
  • Faculty mentoring in research and teaching
  • Faculty and staff supervision and evaluation
  • Development activities
  • General outreach activities
  • Teaching PA curriculum, research, and service
  • Assuring program compliance with the criteria for accreditation

The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about the use of student focused pedagogy in the classroom to engage students in the learning process and will join a unit that is dedicated to providing students with access to high impact practices aimed at increasing student retention, persistence, and success. Responsibilities include teaching graduate students, advising and supporting graduate students in our Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program, and service to the school, college, university, and community.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Associate Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. Positions associated with this position classification may be located in facilities requiring the position to be designated “sensitive” as defined by University policy. Positions associated with this position classification may include job duties, responsibilities, or activities that are subject to export control regulations. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Additional Qualifications

  • Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies or closely related field
  • Three years of recent full-time higher education experience
  • Current or emeritus NCCPA certification
  • Relevant clinical experience
  • Potential for, or evidence of, innovative learner-centered pedagogy
  • Sustained record of scholarship including peer-reviewed publications, commitment to obtaining and managing grants and other external funding, and a record of teaching excellence
  • Potential for, or evidence of, mentorship and support of student populations, faculty, and staff
  • Previous effective university administration or leadership roles
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Successful candidates must present evidence of above as well as:

  • Involvement with academic strategic planning, curriculum planning, faculty recruitment, development and evaluation, fundraising, student recruitment and retention, program assessment and budget and resource management
  • Demonstrated interest in providing quality educational programs and innovation in education/training of physician assistant students
  • Experience with PA accreditation
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to lead a team toward goal achievement
  • Experience working with multiple constituencies and the experience or potential to build effective collaborations with the program, as well as with the University and community
  • Ability to lead through democratic team building and promote cohesiveness and a culture that values diverse views and perspectives.
