BACKGROUND

The Clinical Negligence department represents claimants and their families following poor medical treatment. The team at Hugh James are top-ranked in both Chambers & Partners and Legal 500, offering one of the largest practices in the UK.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Strong organisation and time management skills are a key element to this role as is the ability to work under pressure in order to meet tight deadlines. Excellent client care skills are also a must.
We are looking for a highly ambitious and self-motivated individual who is comfortable working within a team and on their own. The successful candidate would be a forward thinking individual whose attitude and approach to work is as important as previous experience.

Responsibilities:

THE ROLE

An exciting opportunity has arrisen for an Associate to join the growing team in Southampton.

The role will primarily involve working on new and potential instructions and duties will include:

  • Handle a caseload of clinical negligence work in line with department strategy with a minimal amount of supervision (although of course full support will be provided)
  • Conduct a wide range of clinical negligence cases
  • Maintaining a good knowledge of CPR and the law relating to clinical negligence
  • Providing advice to clients on sensitive matters
  • Draft witness statements and pleadings
  • Reviewing medical reports and provide appropriate advice
  • Maintaining a basic understanding of medical issues
  • Instructing and communicating with Counsel
  • Dealing with highly complex conferences
  • Working with other solicitors to develop and help maintain good client relationships and knowledge within clinical negligence
  • Maintaining a professional attitude
  • Maintaining knowledge of clinical negligence complaints handling procedures by G.P.s and NHS in England and Wales
  • If required, supervise other fee earners
