Description:

Job Title: Associate Director, Digital Fundraising Strategy
Department: Digital Strategies
Location: Oakland, Washington DC or Remote
Reports To: Digital Marketing Director
Supervises: Up to 2 Staff
Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of interdependence. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel injustice, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our future. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it. Sierra Club has close to 800 staff across the country and a network of 64 local chapters that are led and fueled by thousands of volunteers. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with three labor unions representing more than half of our employees.
Scope: The Associate Director, Digital Fundraising Strategy leads the strategy, planning and creative development of the Sierra Club’s email and SMS fundraising program. This position performs a variety of programmatic, strategic, creative and analytic functions; identifies opportunities to improve online fundraising efforts; and works closely with others around the Sierra Club, as well as key consultants and vendors, to ensure that the email and SMS channels align with overall organizational priorities and delivers on revenue goals.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MUST DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Significant experience managing the email and SMS fundraising programs for a mid-large sized nonprofit. Proven hands-on experience with successful direct response programs, specifically email and digital campaigns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing compelling and creative direct response campaigns for email, SMS and web.
  • Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills. Ability to juggle multiple projects at once while meeting tight deadlines with occasional “rapid response” opportunities.
  • Experience managing staff, including experience providing regular constructive feedback and performance evaluations.
  • Commitment to collaborating with others in a complex, dynamic organizational environment. Your first instinct is to develop trust, find creative solutions, and form strong collaborative working relationships.
  • Commitment to continuously deepening and evolving your own understanding of systems of oppression through study, openness, and humility. And you easily recognize your own relationship to privilege and power, examining and shifting your behaviors as appropriate.
  • Solutions-oriented – you see mistakes as opportunities for growth; problems as catalysts for solutions, and inspire others along the journey. You carry a constructive approach, can-do attitude, a sense of humor, and authentic kindness wherever you go.

THE STRONGEST CANDIDATES WILL ALSO DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Hands-on experience working with Salesforce, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and Mobile Commons, including direct email and SMS implementation experience.
  • Knowledge of SEO fundamentals, including keyword research, for content creation.
  • Testing and optimization experience and knowledge of best practices.
  • Experience with cross-departmental collaboration and organization.
  • Proficient in HTML/CSS, website content management systems, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Familiarity with basic design elements and editing software.
