Description:

Summary: The Associate Director of International Programs, reports to the Director of International Programs at Heartland Alliance International (HAI) and is responsible for management, delegation, and execution of day-to-day project tasks, including personnel management and engagement in new business and technical practices. The role involves concurrently managing project(s) of various complexity in the areas of democracy and governance, human rights, and humanitarian programs, funded mainly by USAID, the U.S. Department of State, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, among others, together with roles in business development. The Associate Director will collaborate with other International Programs team members to support and monitor completion of tasks related to aspects of project management, performance, and compliance to ensure adherence with organizational policies, applicable law and regulations, and project requirements. The Associate Director supports the leadership of the director by managing the daily work and staff supervision of Project Officers. The Associate Director is a collaborative leader who works across the Alliance to meet the needs of our participants, and facilitates and supports the work of leaders across international programs.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant project management experience
  • Experience supervising or mentoring employees preferred
  • Thorough understanding of donor client’s requirements and how to apply them to project management
  • Demonstrated project (grants) management skills, including budget management, compliance and procurement compliance, client relations and knowledge of client, and personnel management
  • Demonstrated experience working on one or more projects while simultaneously providing support to proposals
  • Demonstrated experience providing financial and/or compliance support on a project management team
  • Demonstrated experience following standard practices and procedures, receiving general instruction on work progress, and making significant contribution to end results
  • Works independently and as part of a team
  • Previous experience working in international development and/or living or conducting work in developing countries preferred
  • Demonstrated values of Integrity, Partnership, Courage, Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Excellence, and Respect
  • Willing to travel abroad up to 4 weeks per year

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES (K/S/A):

  • Knowledge: Knowledge and experience within human rights, international development, humanitarian or relevant professional discipline with proficient understanding of other areas within the job area
  • Resourcefulness: Demonstrated resourcefulness in problem - solving and initiative to learn new skills; demonstrated experience multitasking with attention to detail, organization, and time management skills
  • Language Skills: Communicates clearly and concisely in both verbal and written communications; strong cross-culture communication and sensitivity skills; language proficiency for assigned geographic area preferred
  • Computer Skills: Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities:

SUPERVISORY (IF APPLICABLE) MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises, mentors, develops, and evaluates assigned staff. Provides regular performance feedback, and the time and opportunity to grow professionally
  • Performs all tasks and responsibilities demonstrating behaviors consistent with HAI’s values and competencies appropriate for the position
  • Performs as Acting Director, International Programs as needed
  • Performs other duties as required
