SHEFFIELD INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

Sheffield Hallam University is the 6th largest university in the UK with a focus on excellence in applied learning for over 30 000 students, of which 4000 are from overseas. Education courses, research, innovation and knowledge exchange activities are housed in the Sheffield Institute of Education (SIoE) part of the College of Social Science and Art.

The SIoE is the home to over 3000 students and 120 academic staff. The SIOE offers a large range of courses in the broad area of education that coalesce in the following broad areas:

  • Early Years and Childhood: Courses in Early Childhood and Childhood Studies and courses leading to Early Years Teacher Status
  • Initial Teacher Education: Undergraduate and Postgraduate Early Years, Primary, Secondary and Post 16 Teacher Education courses, SIoE is the second largest ITE provider in the country. We have been reaccredited as a provider for September 2024 by the Department of Education.
  • Education: Undergraduate courses that take a critical approach to the study of education including Education Studies, Education with Autism, Disability and Special Education Needs, and Education, Psychology and Counselling. Doctoral study in Education. Masters in Education and Professional Practice and specialist Postgraduate courses in Autism and Asperger Syndrome and Special Educational Needs Co-ordination.

The SIoE’s research, knowledge exchange and continuing professional development work aims to improve outcomes for children and young people and enhance the experience of education, child and family professionals. An important focus is evaluation and development of programmes, policies and innovations to support educational improvements and well-being. It focuses on four main areas: curriculum, pedagogy and learning; policy and professional learning; diversity and social justice; theoretical and methodological innovation. Examples of some of the projects undertaken can be found on our Research and Knowledge Exchange Site.

Responsibilities:

For teaching delivery, the Institute of Education is organised into varied subject areas. We are interested in applications for the Secondary Education area with a specialism in Secondary Computing. The Computing course develops students to teach at Key Stage 3 & 4. The successful applicant will lead the PGCE Secondary Computing with QTS course across the Provider-led and Lead Partner routes. The role will include responsibility for teaching, learning and assessment of students at post-graduate level. The role includes working with partners within secondary education settings who provide placement experience for our trainee teachers. The ability to inspire, motivate and connect with students from a range of different backgrounds is essential, as is the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Staff members with the appropriate qualifications may be asked to contribute to other opportunities to contribute to teams across the SIOE.
